My son and I were talking about it this morning and who we were going to be betting on :) We decided there was no "Big Story" as in recent years: Smarty Jones almost dying becausing of banging his head on the starting gate and the owner being ill; Afleet Alex and raising money for Alex's Lemonaide Stand, Funny Cide's "crowd", etc.... There doesn't seem to be a horse out there that they have found to draw the people in and root for them this year with a down on their luck story - perhaps that is the reason?

It's not interesting when 15 out of the 20 still have allowance conditions open to them.

well they're trying to make a big deal out of Storm in May's blindness, but that's about it for the heartwarming stories.
Don't worry. If the media can't find one, they'll make one.
SOMEBODY will have a
1) an injury
2) a drug problem, past or present
3) life-threatening illness
and they'll do the typical boring violin background story when all WE wanna see is how the horses behave in the paddock!

I doubt that I will DVR the coverage. I would have to imagine that all of the coverage will be centered around Barbaro. Which to me is tragic, as we have all had to watch it ad nauseum for the last year. And I feel sorry for the poor bastard who wins it. He will forever be overshadowed by a horse who never was "great."

That's hysterical, Rokeby! The camera pans from octogenarian Merv to the other octogenarian queen-- the one from England -- and then to the other octogenarian Elizabeth, the one who owns Nobiz Like Shobiz.

On another racing board they're so bored they're betting on what color the Queen's hat will be.

I feel the opposite way, I just can't wait for the score to be settled for Bragging rights. Who is the real deal and who's not

All of which does not speak well for the state of racing.

I just can't for the life of me figure out why so many people are fascinated by races that last for hours between cars plastered with advertisements, but not many are interested in the elegance of horse racing.

I must be out of touch with the "real" world.

It's simple. NASCAR fans attach themselves to drivers and follow them through their careers. It's not about the cars, it's about the people.

The problem with horse racing is that the "greats" don't stick around very long, especially now. Most 3-year-olds that run in the Triple Crown are gone before Belmont's fall meet much less the Breeders Cup -- and they don't come back as four-year-olds.

Exactly. How popular do you think ANY sport would be if they were told their participants would have to retire after winning a championship?

As a general rule (of which, there are always exceptions) gamblers are not fans and fans are not "Gamblers." The sport caters too much to gamblers and not enough to fans.

And dumbing down the coverage of our major events isn't doing anything but turning people who are already fans off. The colour men for other sports don't treat their fans like complete morons barely capable of turning on their TV, why do horse racing colour people (aside from the fact that they, themselves, are effin' idiots when it comes to horse racing)?

With 5 minutes to post, some idiot with a microphone will be asking Pam Anderson for her pick in the race. That's the KY Derby to 98% of people that watch it.
