Stallion opinions

Postby Derby2004 » Wed Jun 06, 2007 12:54 pm

I'm looking for a nice stallion for my mare. My list of possibles are:

Omega Code
Sweetsouthernsaint
Wagon Limit
Quest
Even The Score
Saarland

Does anyone know anything of these stallions and their offspring? Thanks

Omega Code is a good looking horse that was quite fast. He has a great female family behind him, but it's a bubble time to breed to him next year. I would also be concerned with the unknown Elusive Quality up top who is turning out to be a good but not great stallion, and no evidence he will be a sire of sires, but none to the contrary either in all fairness.

Sweetsouthernsaint is a solid type and is the only Saint Ballado doing anything at stud. He can get a good horse, but also gets a lot of mediocre horses. I wasn't impressed with him in person, but wasn't put-off either. Horse lacked a lot of presence when I saw him.

Wagon Limit is a good breed to race sort. Solid numbers and good runners. You wont be able to sell them, but they earn their keep. Wouldn't be shocked to see him be a decent broodmare sire if the female family is there to help. Good looking stallion as well.

Quest I haven't seen, but Seeking the Gold is a pretty solid sire of sires from limited sons at stud. I actually think Quest will throw a lot of stamina into mares.

Even The Score I havent seen. His female family doesn't do a whole lot for me and Unbridled's Song is in a precarious spot right now with the failings of Buddha. Time will tell... his best looking sons dont have foals on the track yet.

Saarland is having fertility issues. Liked his physical, love his family, would breed early and often with a very fertile mare.

If you're set on breeding in Florida, I would recommend Concorde's Tune. Great numbers, great looking horse, gets real race horses, and sells well in comparison to fee if you're selling in Florida.

I appreciate your opinions. I was also looking at Trippi, Wisemans Ferry and Canadian Frontier.

LOVE Trippi and hear he's on his way to Kentucky next year if all goes well this year.

Wiseman's Ferry I also love. Cant beat that female family.

Canadian Frontier is a horse i'd wait on. He was a decent race horse with a great pedigree, but he's at a farm that gives up on their stallions and the people who support them VERY quickly. I like the Jones' but they leave a lot of breeders in a hole.

Maven is spot on with that analysis I would also add Concerto in the breed to race category.

Sweetsouthernsaint is a big individual with plenty of bone and substance; head is as plain as a milk jug but they don't race on that. (It isn't disproportionately big, just plain.) He has better forelegs than a lot of Halo-line horses.

Trippi put me in mind of a good-quality Quarter-Arab cross; lots of muscle but not as much bone as Sweetsouthernsaint. Might be a good choice for a mare who tends to be a bit coarse.

Concerto is small but with good bone for his size; generally fairly correct as I recall.

Haven't seen any of the others mentioned.

What is the name of your mare- pedigree? That will also help quite a bit with the suggestions.

The mares name is Her Jet by Northjet. She has produced a G3 winner on the turf at a mile by Double Honor and another stakes winner by Line In The Sand. So Mr P seems the way to go.

I spoke with Ryan at Darby Dan and he said they have been using a new program for Saarland and his.....problems. He stated that he is not fertility problems, it is the shortness of time that his sperm are staying alive. So they are sending the mares to him 3 or 4 times at no cost to the owner. And he also said that Saarland had 12 babies accepted to FT July select. So now I am looking at him more also. Any opinions on stallions under 15k for her jet?
