Tony Dutrow hits 1,000 wins

Postby winds » Fri Oct 19, 2007 8:39 am

My buddy Tony Dutrow got his 1,000 career win as a trainer yesterday. Unlike his younger brother Richard, he hasn't gotten any suspensions for drug overages. Plus, he consistently has a 30% (or near) win percentage.

You know, there are more trainers like him out there and they need to be celebrated and talked about. More than the others who rely on their vet to do everything for them.

What do you think?

I go way back with the Dutrow family from when my father had horses with the father and I had horses with Rick and Tony. Both Rick and Tony are excellent horsemen.

Dick Dutrow was a HECK of a horseman! He didn't miss a beat when he moved his operation to NY. The one "knock" on him coming from Maryland was that he couldn't stretch a horse out, but when he was stabled in NY, he sure proved that to be wrong. My gosh, what a great job he did with King's Swan, among others.

It's nice when sons take their lessons well.

Definetly, I worked for Tony and during the winter was the designated "Assistant" to go with the horses to NY. I got to spend alot of time in Richard's barn. It is well run, that's for sure. He has outstanding assistants.

I just don't like the overages he's had. But aside from those, all of his horses are fed peppermints (as are Tony's) and are treated like gold.

Richard has had problems with drugs himself, but it looks like he has it under control now.

Their dad was a fantastic trainer. He won 3 stakes races in one weekend at Laurel a couple of years before he passed. That's a nice accomplishment for someone that doesn't have 200 horses.

Hey Winds...remember how Dick Dutrow used to get teased about needing Grecian Formula? Once, PG Johnson mentioned it to him and he told PG, "Look who's talking - the three hairs you have left on your head are gray!" LOL!

That sounds like Dickie. After his foray into NY he came back to MD and ruled there.

My oldest son Joseph Anthony was born 10-29-02 and Tony and Kim's son Anthony was born 9-30-02 (30 days apart), and we were in close barns at Delaware park while our youngsters were little. Kim and their long time asst. Victor were the first one to the hospital to see my 2nd child, Lauren born 10-10-94 when she was pregnant with their 2nd child. They had the nicest filly then, named Ann Dear, who won some nice stakes before a devastating, fatal injury. Tony and Kim are great people, I havent talked to them in awhile but I always wish them the best with their horses.

They are the sweetest people. I have a funny story to tell. I first met them when I worked for Charlsie Cantey. We had some over flow horses in the same barn Tony was in. Besides us, there 2 other trainers in the barn. Now, our trappings matched, Tony's trappings matched and the other woman trainer's trappings matched. Only one trainer's didn't. Now we were in the barn a few days, when Lou (the unmatched trainer) is walking one of his horses. He stops in our shed and calls to me, "Sweetie, hey girl." I look over and address him polietly, we have a small conversation, and then he tells me "Hey, you'd better lock up any of your stuff that's important. You've got to be careful about Tony, (nods towards Tony's shedrow). He'll steal anything that's not bolted down.

Well, let me tell you, I almost bit my tongue in half to keep from laughing. If you walked in his shedrow, he had webbings from just about every trainer at Laurel. Later that evening before I left to go home, I stopped by the barn to check up on our horses. There were Tony, Kim and the boys. Kim and I got to talking and I told her about my earlier conversation with trainer Lou, I thought she was going to fall to the ground laughing. She called Tony over and asked me to repeat it to him, I did and he started to laugh and shake his head.

I told them that it took everything I had to not laugh at Lou when he told me. We've been friends ever since.

I saw both of them at Timonium, Tony was busy on the phone, but Kim and I spoke. She said the boys are so big now. Time sure does fly and children grow up fast....................
