How do you figure his best horses are all active at the same time ???
Smart Strike has shown a lot of potential from day one.
His 1st crop he sired 10 stakes winners from 59 foals that included million dollar earners Tenpins and Fleetstreet Dancer
His second crop 6 stakes winners from 72 foals but it included Horse Of The Year Soaring Free and Champion Portcullis
His 3rd crop included Added Edge
His 4th crop included Champion Eye Of The Sphinx and Grade 1 SW Shadow Cast
English Channel came out of his fith crop and Curlin out of his 7th crop;
With the group of mares Smart Strike will be breeding this year will finally be the equivalency of what A. P. Indy and Storm Cat have bred all along.His best most likely is still out there to come.
A. P. Indy will be 20 next year and is cryptochid to boot.His days may also be getting thin just because of the one testicle syndrome.

My mare was "boosted" last year after she was bred to an older stallion while I waited, didn't take very long at all.

I started off my comment with how consistently good he's been, but his stud fee hike came off the success of Curlin, English Channel, etc. of 2007.
Most of his previous graded winners or champions did their best running in Canada and more times than not could not transfer that form in the states.
Soaring Free, although a champion in Canada, never showed it in the states when it counted.
Tenpins was a good horse but never had the ability to win at the G1 level.
Fleetstreet Dancer had huge help in the earnings department from his single stakes win that happened in Japan. Otherwise, he was a multiple graded stakes placed runner. Good horse but never was able to get the job done.
Portcullis success was also limited to Canadian races.
Added Edge was a consistent G3 performer.
Further more, many of his stakes winners have been homebreds by Sam Son farm. Everyone know how incredible their broodmare band is, so it's not like he was getting dogs at stud.
Again, I think Smart Strike is a terrific stallion, but until getting two extremely good runners in Curlin and English Channel in 07, he was a stallion who had produced good runners who seemed like they just couldn't break through when it counted in the states.
And just to further my point, Smart Strike has produced four US G1 winners, and all but one of them earned G1's in 2007. Again, he had an explosive year and that's why they could justify a stud fee hike of a 100k.
Now, maybe all those moaners who screamed every time a mare was retired and announced as going to Storm Cat in the last 2 years will get it. He was getting OLD. He wasn't going to be around for ever. IF you were going to go, you had to go NOW.
So retire a filly and breed to a stallion because he won't be around long...who cares what you might get, it's Storm Cat. Why not breed to the best stallion for the mare, regardless of how old he is or long he will be around. Oh I forgot there is business involved, which doesn't involve breeding and raising the best race horse possible.

He was a track record holder and Graded winner at Keeneland if I'm not mistaken, won the Woodbine Mile G1, which is a race in Canada that has been won by Leroidesanimaux, Kip Deville and Shakespeare in recent years and was 4th or 5th in the BC Mile at SA (I think) after he washed out big time. Of all the horses mentioned he was not just a Canadian wonder.
I agree with the rest of them, but he was a top class horse in Canada and the US, it just happened that he was based in Canada and ran there more often.

Storm Cat too - he's 'served' us well, deserves a rest also.
But do they miss the breeding when they are pensioned? Are they happy?
