Foal-White Nasal Discharge-Bad

Postby dsmelnic » Tue Jul 29, 2008 9:36 pm

Last week I noticed my four month old filly-weezing and having large amount of white greenish discarge coming out of her nose. She eats fine and has no diarrhea. Called the vet-and they stated to place her in Uniprime oral power for 14 days. She also has a lump under her chin. When she runs she weezes bad and snorts. Has anybody seen this-how serious is it, and what do you recommend. Filly and mom are turned in every night and stay outside all day. Hope somebody can help.

Did the vet come out and give her a check over? Or did they just do it over the phone? Has she ran a temp at all? The lump is it under her throat latch? Is it hard or does it look like it will burst with puss?

Vet did it over the phone-it was on a Sunday. He told me it was not a big deal-and just use Uniprim...seems too easy. Vet is not really a horse vet-primarily dogs and Cats. Lump is under the throat latch and is soft-feels like a ball of fat.

Ok.. you did not say if you have temp her at all? How is she overall. Bright and frisky? Or dull and depressed? I would have a vet come out asap IF it was my foal. I would be worried about strangles. Have you had any new horses come and go? I would also be worried about her weezing ect. I would have them check her lungs. Do you have a horse vet that can come out and look at her?

She is frisky and alert. I will have a vet come see her this week. No I have not had a temp on her. The weezing and snorting is coming from the flem and discharge from her nose.

Spec Tuss (guaifensin) is good in combo with the Uniprim for thinning the mucous. Hope you have her separated from other youngsters as the lump would make me worry about strangles but could just be swollen lymph node.

Does this mean you didn't check her temperature, or she didn't have a fever? If she has any kind of a fever, it is a serious red flag situation in a foal, and you should have a vet out -- and maybe a different vet. They can croak so easy. Foal pneumonia is not to be taken lightly even for a single day.

But if you have checked her temp several times and she had no fever, I would give her some SMZ, maybe 4 pills depending on her size, melted in water and mixed with pancake syrup (or maybe she'd eat it in some grain). Twice a day! Watch the stool and if it gets loose, discontinue the SMZ. I think you'll see the snot turn white and then clear and then dry up within a week.
