Can you blame them. It's been a rather rough year. Economy included.

On a serious note, I have a question. and this might ruffle some feathers, but it's a true, practial matter.
Becuase of american racing, we have sorta....engigneered more horses than the world needs or really wants. you breed dogs, you can give a cute puppy away in the paper easily. not everyone wants a 1-2k a month extra expense pet in a horse.
so, the question i ask is, while I don't like slaughter, I at the same time am a pragnatist. What are we going to do with the extra 50k or so QH and TB horses that get born every year?

I don't think taking a stand at the entry box will have much effect. This is a short meet at Hollywood. It is coming to a close shortly. Heck they ran a 3 horse stake race the other day.
Ship north. They have full competetive fields.
Well, "B" using slaughter like a trash disposal for horses isn't my thing. A don't like the idea of a horse being cranked on until it has little to no value as anything including meat. Coming off track, it's not going to be used for human consumption. the practice of eating horse meat, something that's not for me.
BUT
IF horses were raised as farm animals intended solely for consumption, we would likely not object so loudly to their use. I eat meat gladly. Grew up in ag. rich communities and am not blind to cattle and their lives in feed lots and their treatment from birth to slaughter. It's not all humane and lovey dove treatment, and I am still glad to fork a good fillet down my throat. Veal I won't do. That's not even bordering on right treatment.
In racing we expect and do a degree accept that some horses are going to break down. And some horses are basically sent out to die. Does that qualify as slaughter? Not everyone does this, but some do. Sad truth. And we use vet checks on race day as a "policing" effort. But it fails and can be a laughable process.
It's good that people will be accountable to where the horses end up after they are used up and no longer useful, but the on track needs to be cleaned up as well. Sad truth.
The economy is creating abandonment problems with domestic animals. Dogs, horses, left in foreclosed homes or properties left to fend for themselves. Horses turned out in the "wild" to fend for themselves. Many starve or die worse deaths than a bullet, or euthanasia. I would rather a bullet than a truck ride to Mexico or Canada to slaughterhouses
N Cal recently had a euthanasia clinic. I applaud them for that. It's sad. But necessary.
People are having to make some very tough decisions in these economic times.

If given a chance many of these horses could find homes in other fields of endeaver. Some need time off first. Others are not suitable for new homes and should be EUTHANIZED. Yes it costs a bit but hey, horses are expensive. Slaughter is terrible but the transport TO slaughter and the auctions is even worse. It's torture to these animals. If somebody doesn't want to bother to check out buyers then they should work with rescues or trainers from other disciplines to find horses homes. Less than 1% of the horses that DIE in America each year go to slaughter. Not living, just the ones that will DIE from whatever causes. It really is a miniscule number and would be further deflated by taking out the middleman who "gather" horses of all breeds from all around the country and concentrate them in a few markets.
The BIG thing is to STOP BREEDING CHEAP HORSES. Yes you find the once in awhile stakes horse that fell down the ranks or the injured former high priced yearling but the majority of the TBs sent to slaughter are to be nice, blue collar at the most. And it doesn't take a genius to figure out that there are WAY too many stock horses bred if they only bring 20 cents a pound at auction.

And so they should, Louis. Encouraged is one thing, made to take responsibility after racing for their horses and their trainer's decisions and not just considering them to be a commodity that is disposable is a great idea.
