I was hoping T. Boone would buy her for Madeline.

Are people going to give these young sires a break when their offspring bomb at the sales in this crappy economy? Young sires are always judged by their sales $$s first and this year most prices are embarrasing (except for, you know, the biggest and baddest dogs). This'll sink the ship of plenty small-time young stallions, I am sure, but will ANYONE get a reprieve?

The Paulson team spent all weekend feeding the media stories that Azeri was at Keeneland to sell. What a bunch of Bull..

Don't know the guy but from a distance Michael Paulson appears to be a jerk. He's bought back over 12 million dollars with Azeri and her baby. What an idiot.

I just read thru Paulson bloodhorse q and a regarding the sale of Azeri. Very interesting and it does not seem like he wants to give up on Azeri or any of her offspring. He is putting her 2YO in the April sale at Keenland. He cant let that horse go for less than 7.7 million. Otherwise he would look like a real idiot.

Craziness - I just got a plane ticket and am headed over Wednesday. I don't need another mare, but the opportunity to upgrade at these prices is too tempting.

As far as Paulson goes, there is an interesting explanation regarding banks and what Azeri is valued at over on the thoroughbred champions board. It makes a lot of sense as to why he didn't sell her from the financial perspective. Still, I'm not sure why anyone would waste their time vetting and looking over any of his horses anymore. If I had the money, I wouldn't.

HOLY S!!!

So the Fu Peg, Congaree, & Hennessy youngsters-
Did they have all of their legs?
Missing limbs....
What?

If these are the sales prices, I am so glad I did not decide to breed this year....
Oh my GOD!!!

Wish I had a few spare thousand (yes only thousand) to pick up some nice critters....But feeding them.....No wonder they are selling so cheap
Yikes...sorry state of the economy....

Jenny....you've got the right idea. Dislocated markets always offer opportunity......whether it's horses, real estate, stocks, bond etc.. I've been watching the prices of a handful of short yearlings and been shocked. It's always tricky to equate price to pedigree without seeing the animal, but very well-bred babies going for very, very reasonable prices.
And DOWN the stretch they come!

Who is that reading pedigrees?

My second "watch mare" is coming up...
... and she sold for $47,000

And the next one's in the ring now...
and brought $170,000.

Good thing I didn't go expecting to pick up some mares for pennies!

I realize nobody really cares, but until someone else posts, I can just keep editing..

My next watch mare is entering the ring next...
... and the streak is broken. No bid.

Yeah, the real weakness is in the yearlings.......so many mares were withdrawn, that there seems to be enough demand for a good mare....but the pinhookers are already drowning in supply of babies and not in position to add more babies to their overhead..... not enough breed to race buyers to soak up supply. We talked about that scenario for quite some time on this site...... the decline of the breed to race buyer...interesting times. Certainly will change breeding habits and choices in the near term.
And DOWN the stretch they come!

SIGH... I have a yearling going through and I know I might was well just stand there and hand the lead rope to someone. No money this year. AND she's Indiana-bred and registered too. By Andromeda's Hero.

Watching this sale is like viewing a tragedy. I knew that things were bad, but this is worse than I expected. You cannot produce a "weanling" really a yearling now, for less than $ 5,000, and that is if you own the stallion and have no fees. How many have gone for less than that? Have all the pinhookers gone out of business?

Could tell this was coming. We have been working to completely change our business plan in the future. It is undeniably a losing business proposition to breed a horse today, and that goes whether you want to sell them or race them. If you want to race, you could of bought some nice yearlings today for a fraction of what it would cost to produce them.
This is turning into a business where only the owners of qualilty sires can breed horses with profit in mind.
Along that line, how is it that prices of yearlings drop 60%, but where is the drop in stud fees! Top farms are not acting in good faith at this point in my mind.
