Vet says 23 mares in foal and 5 open, so it's time to give someone else a chance. With a free mare, you can afford to spend a little extra on stud fees!! Or maybe bid a little higher for that stallion season you were interested in!! I also have a few that I didn't breed last year and they are also free. Everyone... please. Let's TRY to be kind and give people the benefit of the doubt. It seems that, no matter what someone posts any more, they are going to get harassed. There is negativity everywhere.
We all know there are a lot of horses who need new homes, now more than ever. Let's be supportive of those people who try to spread the word, find their horses homes, etc. Especially when they are not trying to profit personally by asking people to pay adoption fees or outright buy the horses.
I might remind you that a recent thread was posted trying to find homes for older broodmares, and that thread stated that the mares could not be bred. People jumped ALL over that, upset because if they get a mare, even an older one, they should have the opportunity to assess for themselves if the mare is breeding sound, etc etc etc. Now, somone posts mares to a good home OR breeding operation (in essence stating that they are not taking that option away from people) and THEY get pounced on. If you have concerns about something posted, my suggestion would be to PM the person and clarify the situation, rather than embarass the person publicly. Maybe even offer to help.
I'm really afraid that people are going to stop posting about these horses, stop trying to find homes for horses who may really need new homes, because they don't feel like taking all the heat that people here are so willing to dish out over cyberspace.
I don't know this person or the person who posted the other thread, and don't know if they really NEED to move these horses or not, so I'm not implying anything at all with regard to their specific situations. I just wish people in general would stop being so darn cynical toward others around here. It's a disservice to the horses.

Thanks to everyone for coming to my defense, but I thought I'd take a minute to respond myself. This is a sad post in the fact that I have had TB's since 1989 and currently have my numbers down to 89 from a high of 111. It's sad because the state of the economy is finally forcing me out of the business and sport I love. It took me years and lots of $$ to amass this band of mares, and when I was first getting started, I'd have thought I was in Heaven if I'd read a post like this one...a chance to get a head start. Sadly, I can no longer afford the $38,000 per month it takes to run my operation and rather than try to get anything for them at all, I wanted to see if someone could use them...for free in their programs, with their young stallions or on a proven stud for sale or race. They are not the greatest mares, but they are good, healthy and still useful. Most of my mares require Regumate and it is expensive. I spent lots of money with the VA Bred on stallion seasons and chose which mares would receive Regumate based upon the no-guarantee seasons I had won. The mares that were under contract or had live foal guarantees were on their own and a few didn't hold on to their foals...but a few did, which is a little blessing. I think sad is the state of our business and the mindset of a majority of the people in it. Really sad will be when I no longer employee 6 farm hands, 3 trainers, 9 boarding facilities in 7 states, use 3 transportation companies twice a month, don't use 110 bales of Coastal and 70 bales of Alfalfa per WEEK, or 5 tons of feed from my feed store or use 3 local vets, etc.

Just thought that I would second the idea that a breeder who is just starting out or has an unproven stallion (such as myself) would appreciate the opportunity to get a foal out of some of these mares. Yes, they are older, however most of them have solid production records and are very nicely bred.

Folks, I have had the pleasure of meeting Brian. He is a person who has always taken first class care of his horses and has given a lot to the effort to follow his dream and breed a classic racehorse. I am very sorry to read about the what is going on with Dormello Stud. These are hard times for a lot of us, and I hope that someone can step forward and find a home for some of these mares.
