There is no excuse for a guy like Herman Heinlein to have one of his horses wind up in peril like this. He has had some great runners, had horses in the Ky. Derby, and is extremely wealthy. I plan on calling him and telling him.

With a double barreled shotgun and a noose is how (thats if you are lucky enough to catch someone in the act, course there would be no remains being found in their case....)

I cannot fathom how someone could do that. The picture of Commanche was horrifying. Imagine if his owner had been a young child who accompanies her parents to feed. WTF is wrong with people. If you want to live in America the OBEY THE LAWS or go the hell home! WE DONT EAT HORSE MEAT HERE AND IT IS ILLEGAL TO SLAUGHTER FOR CONSUMPTION (course, people doing this probably are illegal too)

Rant for the day. This just sickens me.

The person that really seems to be the evil one here isn't Heinlein but this Marian Brill. She got the horse for free from Heinlein and then sold it for $500 -- and she won't say to whom.

Since horsemeat is selling for $20 a pound, I doubt that many illegal immigrants are consuming it themselves -- and they wouldn't be working in the slaughterhouse if somebody with $$$ didn't hire them -- and the slaughterhouse owner/operator wouldn't be engaging in it if there wasn't a large group of very well off people willing to buy it despite its illegality.

I wouldn't rush to judgment against Mr. Heinlein - from my reading of this report, which is far richer with half truths and inuendos than it is with facts, Mr. Heinlein gave the horse for free to someone whom he knew to be capable of 'handling' a horse that needed serious rehab (per the story he had a "broken leg" - though that is such a typically catastrophic injury that I suspect in this case we're really dealing with a horse that had popped a fracture, ending his racing days but not his future usefulness). IF you think you can 'sell' a horse with such an injury legally to anyone in this country other than someone who is taking that horse to it's ultimate fate to be butchered you're crazy. IF you do not have a farm or the handling skills to rehab a horse with such an injury you do it no good by keeping it. From what I've read it sounds like Mr. Heinlein DID find someone with the interest in taking care of the injured horse and the skills to do so. That person was Marion Brill (described as being a horse handler, perhaps eveb the subject horse's handler when it was on the track?). It is hard to know from the story if he personally donated the horse to Ms. Brill or told his trainer to 'find the horse a home' and it was given to Ms. Brill in fulfillment of his wishes or if she stepped in to 'rescue' the horse she had previously handled while it was sound for racing from being sold off the track to 'the meat man'? Any of those scenarios would fit what is described in this story without changing one word it is written so loosely. Mr. Heinlein may have had every reason to believe that the horse had gone to someone whom he thought cared enough to take care of a horse with a 'broken leg' AND had the knowlege to rehab a horse with such an injury. Reading between the lines it sounds as though Ms. Brill indeed did care for the horse while it was in her care - at least enough that he was sold 'sound' enough for use in a childrens' pony ride ring. As I read the story it is the person Ms. Brill sold the hore to who in turn sold him to his butchers but I cannot be sure of even that. Perhaps he was sold on yet again before falling into the hands of his butchers or perhaps he too was rustled/butchered in the night like others mentioned in the story?

The quality of reporting in this article is so poor as to make it very dicey to try and draw any solid conclusions except for these: 1) there is an active illegal/black market for fresh horse meat in the immediate Miami area and 2) horses, both pet and former/off the track racehorses are being sold/stolen to fill that market demand via 'dark of night' butchering. What I get from this story is that ANY horse stabled just about anywhere in Miami is fair game for this horrendous and illegal practice. The third thing I get from this article is that despite the current economy there are recent immigrants in the Miami-Dade county area who are willing and able to pay $20/# of horsemeat to satisfy their cultural based tastes. They are appaently in this country with little respect for our laws and should be punished to the full extent of the existing laws including expulsion for having commited a criminal offense without the protection of citizenship.

there have been rumors of illegal slaughter facilites circulating for a while now, so that aspect of the story I tend to believe.

I do agree that the reporters choice of words is pretty poor...her comment that "some cattle ranchers" are going around the law by shipping outside of the US, shows that she really hasnt researched the horse slaughter industry very well, and was more interested in the sensational aspects.

sad, sad story though

So sad for the horses but even worse for pets that are stolen and butchered. It REALLY shows a person's lack of morals to steal a pet for this purpose when free and cheap horses abound.

(Not that I support the slaughtering part of course but why steal one when you can get one free off Craig's List??)

I was told to avoid roadside BBQ stands in south FL!!

Slaughter in Miami area???

Animal Planet's Animal Cops show from Miami had an identical scenario a couple years ago. They were using the meat for roadside burger wagons. They caught the perpetrators on the show.

Sorry but I know Ms. Brill and she knew exactly where the horse was going. People at the track give her horses all the time for her to find a "good" home for.

Whoa, boys.. this board is about horses, not humans.

There are plenty of Americans with no respect for America - like the bankers that melted down our financial systems through their own arrogance and greed. However, let's get back to the topic at hand. Miami is a very intriguing blend of cultures. There is a large Santeria population that perform ritual animal sacrifice - in their front yard or on the porch of their apartment building if that is all they have. Chickens, goats, etc. I don't think they would mess with sacrificing a horse. But you wanna talk cruel??? They hold down the defenseless animal, slit its throat while it is fully awake and aware, and collect the blood as it flows out. I think that while Metro Dade and Animal Control and others have NOT been able to intervene (they got sued - see the US Constitution and freedom of religion) if the Santerias actually STOLE a racehorse and slit its throat on their front steps, they could be arrested for theft.
So Run for the Roses, as fast as you can.....
