I found the web site of one of the groups doing the analysis at http://www.mcdonald.cam.ac.uk/projects/genetics/projects/thoroughbreds/index.htm.

There's an update on their site and they say the data is in final analysis.

I wonder is someday, through Y chromosome analysis, if they can EVER find who Eclipse's real father is. Marske or Shakespeare.
Probably not though. I still wonder if that is true and the story has fascinated me for a long time.

Does anyone know if the Australian non-GSB families have a history similar to that of the American families in terms of origin? Were many of them short-bred horses from Ireland and England, or were they brought in from India or other locations closer to Australia?

Are the Polish non-GSB families rooted in Arabian breeding? [People who claim the Polish Arabians are impure will insist many of them trace to Thoroughbreds... ]

Bast,

Have you looked at what the TB Heritage site has to say on the matter?

What I am curious about is if any of these "untraceable" mares are likely to have a background similar to those proposed for the American families. I am nearly through Mackay-Smith's book about Speed and the Thoroughbred and wonder if the Hobby/English runner types reached Australia as well.

My first guess would be that less Hobby blood reached Australia than North America simply because the first importations to Austrailia were ~150 yrs later. During those years the source population was materially changed by the Arab, Barb & Turk imports. For a far more informed opinion, scroll down to 'Colonial mares' on the Family Numbers page at bloodlines.net. There's an email link for someone quite knowledgeable re. this matter.

Some of the Australian horses have East Timmor Pony as foundation stock. Wouldn't be a surprise to see that show up in the early mares too.
