Dublino: While not everyone is a commercial breeder , sales prices directly reflect the opinion of owners and trainers as to which individuals are most likely to succeed on the track. That is why Mineshaft, Macho Uno and Harlans Holiday can command higher stud fees than MB.
Alook at Apex numbers pretty much sums it up
Mineshaft 2.06;
HH 1.81
Macho Uno 1.56
MB only 1.28.
While MB may have a few great runners, there are alot of bad ones out there. Its pretty dificullt to justify his jump in stud fees. Guess the number of outside mares he breeds this year will determine whether or not other breeders feel the same way.
Milwaukee Brew's Stud Fee At $12,500
Moderators: Roguelet, WaveMaster, madelyn
I guess I just don't see it, if Frank is so smart and if this horse is such a great deal then why did Adena just unload 68 mares in foal to him for peanuts? If indeed $12,500 is such an amazing price for this horse then why dump all your holdings in him? Anyone want to take a stab at guessing why Sligo Bay also whent up in price? Adena sold 25 in foal mares for an average of $3,000 each and now they tell me I have a great opportunity to breed to him for only $6,000.00.
I don't dislike MB at all but in this economy I'm not playing their games with my money. I would rather ship to Lanes End where they showed us breeders some compassion and lowered the fees. When I can get to Belong To Me for 7.5k and Pleasant Tap and City Zip for 10k then thats where you can find me. Dublino can have my spot to MB because I won't be needing it.

I am finding this thread very interesting.
Of course you are all welcome to breed to three time Canadian Champion JUDITHS WILD RUSH for a reasonable fee for his first year at stud. There hasn't been many horses with his credentials starting there career in Ontario, only ending up here after trying there hand elsewhere.
When setting his fee we considered the economy and the breeders in Ontario. What do you think his fee would have been if he stood at Gardiner? I am sure a heck of a lot more!
Same horse.. three time Soverien Award Winner, 2 yr old Canadian Champion, stakes winner every year from ages 2 til 7, millionaire, highest Beyer for a 2 yr old in North America, beat the best... Mobile, Wando, A bit o Gold, Silver Train, Consolidator etc, etc Retired sound after a very long and lucrative campaign.... different location.
We offer reasonable board rates and have a nice facility with experience and caring people. There are also some concessions for the right mares.

I think Gardiner has always kept its stud fee's reasonable & realistic, as well as taken into consideration their clients, re: the current economy. I have sent mares there to be bred & the bills are minimal. I like that the repro vet is right there.. yada yada. Milwaukee Brew & Judiths Wild Rush, you aren't comparing the same thing.. Milwaukee Brew is a proven stallion. I have to be honest i didn't think it was great for the JWR when they put him back in training after retiring him .. i thought it sad to be & not deserving of a horse who tried his guts out and did so much for its owners.

I don't see MB and JWR being all that similar either. I loved JWR as a racehorse, not his fault he had questionable connections. IMO they damaged his potential stud career by running him over and over at Ft Erie with terrible results in 2009. I was really ticked off watching them try to squeeze the lemon dry while running him maybe 10 x and not winning anything. He is a beautiful classy individual and I'm glad he landed in a good place, I wish you all the luck with him Jenny.

I wasn't saying they are similar at all. I was pointing out that whether he stands at Gardiner or not he is still the same horse at either local.
I also don't see how his potential as a stallion is flawed because of his poor performance this year. Does this make whatever foals he has less likely to achieve because his last year of racing was not good? I didn't know he was retired before this year. He is sound and ran sound his whole life. I have never had a phenomenal horse like JWR before but I can imagine it is hard to let the glory days go when they are done racing. Even harder when they are the gelding I am sure.

People tend to remember the most recent events and 2009 did not make the best impression. I am not faulting the horse and of course if he can reproduce himself then you are sitting on a goldmine. It just makes your job of attracting the mares that much harder than if he'd have gone out after a winning season.
JWR is a cool horse. The horse should have come first, its no slight Jenny, on you as its nice the horse has landed in a spot where he will be well cared for. But its sad to see a horse like him, run his guts out in cheap races and not do well because the poor buggar was probably sore and tired. I couldn't believe they brought him back this year. It was disgusting on the connections part. Kind of like when Wake At Noon retired, came back over & over & didn't do well its pretty sad to see a good horse treated that way. Wake at Noon has fallen off the planet i cringe to think where he spending his days.

I agree with you. Although JWR never ran in the claiming ranks and his owner would never have let him. Look at all the good horses who end up breaking down in low level claimers. I could name countless that I have seen and broke my heart. JWR is very well and loving retirement.
I am sure he will get quite a few mares and hopefully he will prove his worth.

I think this is a great post to accentuate the pos/neg on MB's stud fee increase. To be frank (no pun intended
) there is more on the negative side. I am giving serious consideration to sending some of my mares to KY because of all the deals that are being offered. I will definately not pay $12,500 for MB this year. Good looking horse that is throwing runners but if they can't recoup the stud fee and and costs then why not breed to a stallion that does? There are plenty of stallions that throw runners and still produce a nice sales yearling. It is rediculous to say that commercial appeal doesn't matter, of course it does. Everyone wants to see the horses they breed go on and have succesful careers as race horses but it has to make economical sense to be able to recoup some loss in the sales ring. I haven't heard what is happening with Trajectory's stud fee for '10 but I'm curious to see if they change his fee, his connections have been very fair to breeders IMO and he can throw a nice sales horse. Dublino - do you really think either of those stallions are going to be commercial?
"People come and go but horses leave hoofprints on your heart"
Yes, there certainly are deals here. I was playing with trueNicks one night and the very next day got an email from a stud farm offering me 50% off on an advertised deal they had where my mare got an A or better with BOTH trueNicks and eNicks. I actually have TWO mares that qualify for that...
So Run for the Roses, as fast as you can.....
