They call her a "buttermilk buckskin". Never heard of such a color, but that's just me. She is stunning... :D

Well ... what their FOAL coats look like and what their MATURE coats look like can be 2 very different things!!!

Here is Dudley that belongs to a client at about the same age as the filly you posted:

and here is Dudley as a 2 year old:

Here is my Nightlight filly as a baby:

Image

and then as a yearling:

Image

Chai Latte I REALLY thought was going to stay light from her baby picture:

Image

but she is getting darker and darker each year it seems ...

I think with buckskin's in particular or the bay/brown based dilutes, what you see as a baby is not necessarily what you are going to get going forward as their coats shed and change each season ... :)

Hi TC, thanks so much for the lesson in colour! :D I just posted the pic cause I thought she was beautiful, and frankly, I had never heard of a "buttermilk buckskin". But then I am not a colour professional as you all are. Although, I do love all my chestnuts 8).

I hope you are using the "professional" part loosely!

My knowledge on colour PALES in comparison to people like ACC and Riddle Me This ... :)

I think my Faux Finish mare came as close to a true "buttermilk" buckskin (especially at maturity) as anything I have seen, especially in the TB's - this is her as a 2 year old:

and then at 4:

She really retained that light, dappley hue all the way through, through each successive coat shed each spring as well ...

To me buttermilk has always been more of a white buckskin:

(although this one appears to possibly have dun as well):

But it's all really subjective.

Hi TC, no, not really. You breed for colour and athleticism from what I read, so I was not being factitious. I totally understand DNA, RNA, dominant, and recessive, but frankly, I breed to race, so whatever colour I get is fine by me!
:D :D

I do appreciate your input, and ACC and Riddle Me This are incredibly knowledgeable so I will always defer on the colour thing. Again, I just thought she was gorgeous. So shall I assume that she will only get darker as she ages? And, ACC you just had to confuse me more with "white buckskin didn't you?? :?

I do suspect she'll get a bit darker, but it's not always predictable.

Oh I meant it literally, not a color term. A buttermilk buckskin to me has a nearly white body and black points. The next term would be a golden buckskin which is a bit darker than TCF's mare so I don't know that I have a term for her. However, it is subjective and if you look at buttermilk itself you might decide TCF's mare is just that.

Yeah - compared to ACC's example, Faux Finish is more of a BROWN or golden buttermilk buckskin, if there even IS such a thing!

Heck - the Jockey Club calls her "bay" anyhow. She's one HECK of a light bay!!!

And I think if you asked for current pictures of that filly of Brenda's in that ad, you'd see her much much darker now and even more so in the spring

buckskins

Postby framed » Sun Jan 09, 2011 7:54 pm

Looks like a very cute filly. Glad to hear her brother landed a nice spot. Buckskins are tough ones to predict. From what I've seen in other breeds, usually takes 1-3 yrs to reach the final color, if they carry a sooty or smutty gene/modifier. (not sure which it is. ACC??) Will be interesting to follow these youngsters and see their colors at maturity. Posting a couple of pics of my colt in early fall, then again in early winter with my daughter and her friends. One of the mothers sent me this shot. I prefer not to take many pictures in winter! A shaggy baby just makes me long for Spring that much more! He looks lighter in his winter coat, though I see the same with my palominos. Will be interesting to see what we have in the Spring. Thanks for posting the pic of Chai Latte! Love that head/neck shot. I've always wanted to see a pic of her at maturity. What a lovely face! Wish HH would share a few more photos of her.
Thanks HH for helping with photos!
