Bob Baffert teaches Todd Pletcher how to make an excuse
Per HRTV the factor dislocated his palet.

Hi bdw,
That would be a displaced (soft) palate, not dislocated. It makes sense.....they took him out of his game, took too much hold of him......that helps choke him down. TJ

He didn't run like a horse that flipped or displaced. He had more of a steady fade from the 1/2 mile pole home. Horses that displace tend to stop like they hit a wall since it shuts off their airway.
Although Baffert probably isn't lying, he probably did displace a little when the vet was scoping him, and voila Bob had his excuse. But during the race i doubt it.

what makes me think he isn't lying, is because he has a n excuse even if he didn't get hurt. He is a need the lead type horse, go back to his first race. this race looks the exact same. He lost when martin did not gun him to the lead. when they broke I turned to my dad (who had a ticket on the factor) and told him he can tear his ticket up now and save the time

Bafferts quote didn't exactly sound like the horse was scoped and they found him to have displaced (which 99% didn't happen based on the way he ran).
Garcia had a hold on him, but in no way did he look uncomfortable or in anyway different than he did last time out, I didn't see any "snatching" either. The difference was this time he had horses infront of him and then running by him on the turn and he quit. But to say "my horse got outrun" isn't kosher. So just say "maybe he flipped", ya like you wouldn't pay the $60 bucks to scope him to find out for sure after the race.
“I think (Garcia) tried to take him out and teach him something today, but he wasn’t comfortable with that," Baffert said. "I think he displaced. Martin really had to snatch him in the first turn. He goes with them, they’re going to go in 21. With those two horses (J P’s Gusto and Dance City) it was just ridiculous.

would not shock me to see calvin on stay thirsty. I think ramon has another mount.. i think, don't quote me on that.diomed wrote:The results of this make me appreciate Seattle Slew even more. This year's Derby is a crap shoot. Long price will probably win it.
Who is Calvin going to ride? lol.
but he hitched his wagon to the wrong horse this year.
People will crap on this field, hell I did for a while. this is not THAT bad of a crop.
pants on fire, aracharcharch, nehro, midnight interlude, are not world beaters, but will go 10F no questions asked IMHO. I think the winner comes from that group. t hen you have talanted horses like mo and the factor.

No matter who is in the final Derby field, I think if one could run the race a dozen times, maybe a dozen different horses could win.
I suspect for the first time it will be possible to make a case for EVERY starter to have a plausible chance at winning.
May 2013: Plan ahead now for the Phalaris/Teddy Centennial!

Diomed, said it before, will say it again, I LOVE your avatar! Can watch that great Slew go on and on...they just do not "make" horses like him anymore.
This is not a great crop. It just isn't. It's an "ok" crop, but nothing to remember in a few years. The winner of the Derby is going to be the one that finds himself lucky enough to be peaking at that time, lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time, and lucky enough to be able to get the final jump up to the wire. If we have a runaway winner this year, I'll be surprised. AKA Mine That Bird.
I'm not really even that excited about it this year to be honest. I'm more interested in the older horses, but hell, who IS left of them?! Zenyatta gone, every intact male horse that has done the least little thing is "STANDING" somewhere.. It's no wonder TVG got rid of alot of announcers; there's not that much to announce!!
I hardly think we will see a Triple Crown winner IMHO in our lifetimes. Alot is going to have to change in many aspects to get a horse good enough, tough enough, to do that again. The Great horses of the 70's, Ruffian, Slew, and the Great Secretariat, Affirmed, (sure I'm missing alot), what was IT that made them so great? Was it because they were not so inbred as what has happened in the three decades plus since then?
Anyway, Diomed, keep Slew running, cause we won't see another like him again. Or Ruffian either.
We will NEVER see another Ruffian......
