Too young to race?

Postby casallc » Sat Feb 18, 2012 8:36 am

I ran across this picture in some old stuff. I thought it might get some blood boiling. I hadn't thought about these races for years but was common in the 40's 50's and early 60's. Yearling races were common back then too. The yearling races at Blue Ribbon Downs were popular and worth a little cash. Most people don't realize that Easy Jet won the yearling futurity in 1968 and went on to win 27 of 38 races and never took an unsound step. He then went on to become one of the greatest sires ever, being syndicated for 30 million dollars.

Dinner Bell derbies would separate babies from their mothers for a long while, and then hold the mares just beyond the finish line calling their babies.

Ever seen the photo from the early 1900s of young boys riding John Madden's weanlings?
