With the Kentucky Derby at sight the jockey who rode
GIACOMO to his Derby victory comes to mind when I think
about the following question:
Who in your opinion is or has been the best jockey
in terms of having a clock in his head to callibrate
the pace of a race. Please share examples.
Please include objective rationales for your choice (not merely
winning the race) why you think that particular jockey was the
best or one of the best.
JOCKEY with the best clock in the head.

probably mike smith. JC isn't that far behind.
mike smith can bore you on the lead, he knows when to sit off a pace, he knows just when to move, and he knows when he needs to save ground.
if he has the horse and he can sit behind and just clock a pace he will get it right more times than not.

Calvin Borel has owned Churchill Downs for several years. He knows every grain of sand on the track. He doesn't get the quality horse that the hotshots get but you have to give him an edge at CD. He is not celebrated for his "clock" but he's got a functioning chronometer in his little crooked pin head. You have to give him a little edge from the 3 hole (same as Take Charge Indy won from in the Fla Derby). We all know what he can do on the rail. If Bodemiester and Hansen get into s speed duel and Borel lays back in striking position at the ¼ pole he could very well make it 4 on Saturday.
There are many men of principle in both parties in America, but there is no party of principle.
