According to news on Yahoo (entertainment section), two horses have been killed within a two week period on the set of remake of classic, MY FRIEND FLICKA.
One was a rodeo horse, the other a QH; they both were involved in accidents involving tripping over ropes/lines and died from a broken neck, and a broken back leg.

The equine actor broke free from its handlers and tripped over a rope, breaking its neck. And a quarter horse was put down on Apr. 11 after it tripped during filming and broke its back leg.

Apparently, the ropes weren't there to intentionally trip the horses. From what I saw in another article about the first accident, the horse that broke its neck had broken loose, and became tangled in his own lead rope. They haven't been as specific about the second horse as yet.
Could just be freak accidents...but if they're trying to use horses that aren't professionally trained, they should be taking even better care than usual.
