He probably found out that training, as well as other things he's tried, were harder than he anticipated and went back to something he knows he is good at.

My thing about Gary is that he's more concerned about being the center of attention than he is about actual racing. If it was the racing he wouldn't be coming back to santa anita. 95% of jockeys who presume to come back work their way up. go to Turfway/Louisiana or whatever. that's not good enough here. he wants to be on the center stage. it's not about the horses. not saying he doesn't love horse racing but that's not what this is about. atl east that's my take on it.
if he were serious he'd work his way up. Pval did it, sellers did it. Once he's back in shape and good to go he'd be at santa anita by the breeders cup easily assuming he's back.

Respectfully disagree with you BDW. Personally, I think this is about an athlete who has not lost the urge to compete and feels he has a chance to compete once again on his terms.
PVAL and Sellers had very little to fall back on. Sellers a little more than PVAL. They were coming back as a full-time gig and they had to repair their reputations a little also.
Stevens still has other things in the fire and is apparently not going to quit them. I suppose it is with some regard to that security that it relieves some of the stress of this venture. It would be nice to be in such a position, very few of us are.
Why would he be interested in "working" his way back, when he apparently does not have to? He has said he is going to be selective and he isn't going to ride every day. PVAL and Sellers had to work their way back to get mounts, apparently Stevens does not think that is a problem.
I'll take Gary at his word, until proven otherwise. If the man says he is good to go, then I hope he gets a chance. If he gets enough suitable mounts we will all pretty much know pretty quickly whether this was a good move or not.
A couple things you can be sure of: if he starts to hurt, if he cannot get enough suitable mounts, or within a short period of time he isn't performing up to what he thinks he should, (and wins... he hates losing), he will retire again and do so pretty quickly.
While I have my reservations about how this will work out for him, I can only hope he finds the fountain of youth and returns to the top of the profession.

how can you say that stevens won't quit on them when he's literally, no exaggeration, quit everything he's done since 2007?
trainer, jockey agent, jockey, actor, TV analyst for both networks, quit, quit, quit and quit.
I mean i don't even not like the guy. But I don't think it's fair to say he has nothing to prove. he has to prove he is serious and isn't going to jump the first time he doesn't get what he wants when he wants it.

To be fair, it's probably not "quitting" acting when your show gets canceled. And, per the BH article, he's not quitting his analyst jobs either:
"Stevens said he will ride while continuing to serve as an analyst for HRTV with NBC Sports while he rides races, but plans to selectively pursue mounts."
Dublino have you got a futon?
Got a passport BDW? You said you are taking January off. Sitting in front of a computer isn't helping you learn much about life (as evidenced by this thread) So I'm suggesting you go visit Dublino to broaden your horizons. Take a coat, it's gonna be rainy and cold.

With the strength and conditioning regimens available now, these guys can go longer. Mike Smith is riding as well as ever.
These guys, in their gut, are competitors. You can't get it out of them. Only their bodies say "No More". Now that his body is sound, no reason not to try. I wish him well. Watch out SoCal...

Run the race - the one that's really worth winning.
Eh Diane, wot ya doing?
Firstly Dublino is quiet happy over here on his own, thank you very much.
Secondly I doubt if Bwd has a passport, most Yanks don't - thank god.
Thirdly I think he said he was taken December off.
Fourthly a month with me and he would need a life of theraphy, broaden his horizon's the poor guy would end up back in Arizona sitting in the corner of his room shakin.
And lastly, its feckin Ireland its always rainy and damn cold.
