Am anxiously watching the little fellow's progress. Our first orphan looked really bad ,actually all 3 of them did lose weight. It is a tough go for these little guys without mommy.I will say a prayer for the little fellow.I would do the IV if necessary but I would keep trying to let him eat naturally too.Visit him lots and keep him warm and cosy.Try the pepmal plus yogurt---whatever it takes.God Bless,Marg

LENNY UPDATE

Postby Gerry » Sat May 07, 2005 7:55 am

:D Checked on him at 5 this morning and he was laying down but alive and had drank alittle of his replacer, so I went back to bed and when I went back out at 8 he was up and alert. Scours are gone!!!!! :D

I called the vet and we decided against the IV Fluids (whew!) and we just gave him another shot of Naxcel and more Fastrack Gel (it contains probiotics just like yougurt would except in an easier to feed, more concentrated form), he is also on alittle bute but I think we may take him off that tonite. He was putting up a real fuss with the shot, luckily today there were 2 of us to give it to him, by myself I dont think I would have been able to get him to stand still long enough. After all that I put the milk replacer in the bucket and he went right to it!

Lenny isnt out of the woods yet but he has amiazed me with his fight over the last 5 days....keep up the thoughts and prayers they seem to be working.

Thanks everyone!

I am so happy to hear things are looking a little better. Orphans are so tough and it just breaks my heart to see them struggle. My thoughts and prayers are with Lenny. Claire

Monday update :D

If I could figure out how to get a pic here I would....Lenny is doing much better, even saw a little of evil Lenny  today which was nice. He is eating very well, but laying down alot and has cow patties instead of diarrhea. I am so glad that I didnt have to do the IV and today was the last shot of Naxcel, so we will wait and see what he throws at me next! I promise to keep up the updates but will probably be every couple of days unless (fingers crossed NOT) something drastic happens.

Everyone says that orphans are smaller than other foals but he is by far the largest foal that this mare ever had and he was the smallest at birth...hmmm Lenny will be needing an appropriate registered name soon.

Glad that he is back to the "Evil Lenny" that is always a good sign. :D

I do have a question for you though. Since he was drinking water when he was sick but not wanting the milk replacer, did the vet ever suggest not giving him access to water? The reason I ask is that I've heard that young foals that drink a lot of water can tend to drink water rather than drinking enough milk.

Sorry for going missing for awhile...

1st to answer your question Regal Pleasure...my vet said as long as he was drinking anything it was a good sign and that we would not need the IV's. Since he has been feeling better he is barely touching his water...but he is eating grain, foal lac pellets, drinking milk replacer and being a true terror...

Like a proud momma I took new photos today so I just had to share! He was 6 weeks old yesterday and is afraid of noone and nothing
