Have you seen this kind of chestnut shade in a TB

Have you ever seen a Thoroughbred with exactly this kind of chestnut coat color. Click to the following site and scroll down to photo number seven (7).

What a beauty eh?

Kinda reminds me of the Wizard of Oz when they were singing a horse of a different color riding around the town square.

Omg, I totally just thought that but you got to it first. Totally the horse of a different color--in real life! That horse better have an Oz-related name or there's no justice in this world.

That is neat... I'm in LOVE with horse #5 (I think... the almost-black with a flaxen mane & tail)... WOW! And #10, who looks like a Morgan... liver chestnut with a chestnut mane & tail...

I think my fav "loud" TB is still this filly:

So cool! 8)

Thanks for sharing! :D

Thank you for sharing, Jorge. They are all lovely in their own rights. Of that group, my favorite is the liver chestnut with bright chestnut mane/tail. What a specimen.

I continue to await our dilute babies who should be wonderfully colored as well! :D

Unless the picture color itself is off she looks like a red dun which doesn't occur in TBs. You'd need the rest of the horse (specifically her back) to be sure. She could just be a sun faded pale chestnut. :D

Me and my fiance bought are only broodmare last year at Keeneland November and she's got really interesting color. Her name is Charmander. She's by Dehere.

My better half selected since I know next to nothing about this sport, hence me joining, but she knows everything about pedigrees. I've been reading about the color genetics on this forum for a week or so. What in our mare gives her the unusual color?

JCP, your mare comes from a very nice family! Did she have a filly or a colt by More Than Ready?

She's listed as being grey in the catalogue (grey or roan actually, but since there are no roan TBs, I'll asume she's grey  ). Her color would have come from her dam, Expressive Dance, who got it from her dam, Exclusive Dancer, who inherited it from her sire, Native Dancer.

Or is there a particular, unusual, characteristic of her color that you're referring to?

If you check out her photo on the database, she's sporting the "bloody shoulder" marking. JCP, I think its a trait that came from the Arabian ancestry of the TB, but some of our color freaks are probably better suited to answer that.

She's a very nice mare. Good choice.

The blood marks are a grey thing, any breed can have them. They do seem more common in horses of TB, Arab and QH breeding but that may be more to human selection than natural selection. (some people don't like them much!) Charmander is gorgeous, had no idea her owner was on here, great buy!

Browsing horse photo number 8 it occurred to me to ask: Have anyone seen a gray TB horse with a flaxen-like mane and tail and 4 high leg markings?

Jorge, that is what we in the quarterhorse world call sorrel. Comes in various shades. Depending on the season. We have several in our pasture. From strawberry blonde to new penny copper.

Dear Lei Owen,

Thank you very much for your comments. Have you seen something just like the photo in Thoroughbreds? In QH it's easier, I suppose.

All the Best,
