Lost in the Fog

He did not show up today at Calder. IMO, the most impressive winner(sprinter) of the the day was Too Much Bling.

He seemed very dull and I wonder if he's the type that if he doesn't get the lead, it is over for him. Looked like the others got the jump on him in the first few strides out of the gate. The post position wasn't great either, but we will see what the connections say in the morning. He is still a decent horse and he shouldn't be over the top yet. Maybe he'll stick closer to home to race. Better luck next time Foggy!

I read this morning that perhaps the weight got to him. Hey, when you are considered a top contender, get used to the pounds being piled on. True he spotted a couple competitors 11 pounds, but they finished behind him. And this was a handicap race. He just didn't seem himself yesterday--hopefully he is all right.

I think he's figured out that loosing is a lot easier than winning.

hi guys

Re: Lost In The Fog...the Bloodstock Journal at Brisnet.com offered the following report (in the section titled In Brief) on it's website today (July 18, 2006).

In brief

Champion sprinter LOST IN THE FOG (Lost Soldier), who finished a disappointing ninth in Saturday's Smile Sprint H. (G2) at Calder, will be given a rest and could possibly be retired, trainer Greg Gilchrist told Daily Racing Form. "We're not leaning one way or the other," Gilchrist said. "We'll give him time to get his feet underneath him and see how he is. We want to determine if he can be competitive at the level he should be. If it were going to take two or three months to bring him back, and there was only one race left for him this year, we'd probably retire him." Lost in the Fog lugged top weight of 125 pounds in the Smile. "You can't put a positive spin on it," Gilchrist said. "It's the first time I've seen him not try. He carried a lot of weight, but that had nothing to do with running that poorly."

The portion above (which I bolded) seems to be a no nonsense comment from Lost In The Fog's trainer Greg Gilchrist. Clearly, Gilchrist did not mince his words.

Unfortunately I see him retiring as well. His effort in the Smile was so uncharacteristic I fully expected him to be injured.

With him possibly retiring and Silver Train skipping the BC Sprint, its a big opening for somebody to get in there and make some money

Although it goes against my general practice of breeding to sprinter/milers, I look forward to the chance of breeding a mare or two to Lost in the Fog. Of course, stud fee and farm will play a major part in that too. I love his reflective inbreeding (Native Dancer-Almahmoud-Bold Ruler top and bottom), the fact that his pedigree indicates stamina, his conformation, his low to the ground and efficient action, and of course his brilliant speed. Bred to the right type of mare I think he can throw a two turn horse. I have several mares bred on the reverse cross (Caro over Northern Dancer), and their foals by LITF would therefore carry the reflective inbreeding I so endorse. Like him, they were speed burners on the track, but bred for distance.

I can't help but wonder if Mr Aleo is kicking himself just a bit for not accepting the Arabs' offer of $6 million (or more?) for him. Another bad loss could take millions off his syndication price.

I don't think Harry Aleo ever considered selling Fog at any price. Fog was his fifteen minutes of fame.

If there is nothing physically wrong with Fog I would like to see him get another opportunity but Lost in the Fog's greatness and Greg Gilchrist's trainer reputation are on the line. Valor may hold a big edge over courage.

Lost In The Fog looked like one of our broodmares this last race.
I thought when they held him back until the last sec. in a race I saw a while back he was done but, he did step up an win.
They totally changed his style which was in my opinion to just smoke the field.
Which he did ever well for a while.
I believe he's done.

Hmmm. Think LITF is burned out on racing? He goes 1 for 3 in his four year old season and they are talking about retirement. Maybe he is sick of shipping. Perhaps he has not trained on after having a stellar prior season (sans the Breeder's Cup). Perhaps the competition is catching up to him and giving him a run for his money. Who knows. He goes to stud soon and we have a wide open sprint division.

I think he may have been a colt that had one very good year in him. No shame in that. He was a gas to watch last year and like Michael I find him an interesting stud prospect if he's priced right.

Already thinking about it?

I heard an interview where GG said he had been acting "studdish" - maybe he's heard too much talk about the easy life and it sounded more fun that racing!
