I have a sales agent friend who is real high on this horse for speed in the California market.

Kelly Kip was a Hobeau Farm freak - he dusted Artax a few times and is probably the best sprinter that nobody seems to remember.
His damside is awfully weak and Kelly Kip was a pony sized horse - and I believe a hock injury ended his career. He's sired some "cheap speed" type horses that might do will in the Cal Bred program (say, 5 furlongs on the turf), so if his fee is low enough, he might drum up interest out there.
Is it my impression, or does the Cal Bred program frown on East Coast stallions? I haven't seen all that many stand in California with any kind of success - In Excess did race in NY, but he wasn't an East Coast horse.

I think he's an an excellent breed to race sire. I like his looks from his picture in the BH and he was "iron" especially by today's standards and his wins as a two year old were VERY impressive what with the Sanford by 10 etc. At $4,000 he's worth it as he improves his mares(1:27 to 1:05). He's not well bred? Either was Seattle Slew according to the experts but he did all right.
For the same price range look to Intidab at $5,000 and Wagon Limit at $2,500 in Kentucky. In Florida consider Sweetsouthernsaint at $3,500. All
are proving to be good sires and there's no use spending a lot of money on stud fees because you don't have too... you can get a runner from a reasonably priced stallion as easily as you can from a high dollar one and there's a lot more enjoyment in doing so... also, it's much easier on the blood pressure.

Most racehorses are "freaks". If you are ever fortunate enough to get one and you own the factory, sell all the offspring because there probably won't be another one like it.
