| Pick's Turf Register states that "the Coffin Mare was stole out of the Lord Protector Cromwell's Stud by Mr. [Rowland] Place, of Dinsdale, near Richmond, Yorkshire; and though strict search, and a great reward was offered for her, no account could be had, Mr. Place having kept her closely secreted in a cellar, till after the death of Cromwell. After which, she was distinguished with the name of the "Coffin Mare", for her being so long buried."
The GSB says "the Coppin Mare is confused in Pick, and in old pedigrees, with The Coffin Mare". The two horses must indeed be different as the Coppin Mare was foaled 1690c and the Coffin Mare dates to the time of Oliver Cromwell (died 1658).
Research by Highflyer has identified that this Selaby Turk Mare may be a full sister to the Coppin Mare in the GSB.
This suggests that Family 2 and Family 28 are related, this Selaby Turk Mare appearing in Family 2, and the Coppin Mare in Family 28.
