Jockey Club Purse at Charleston
Bred by King William 4th and sent to South Carolina in 1835. He was unbeaten in nine or ten starts (the accounts vary*) but did not face the unquestioned champion of his day, Boston, or the late 1830s' other top performer, Wagner. *Note: old accounts often used heats run. Broke down in October 1839 at Wade Hampton's private course while in training. Monarch proved a good broodmare sire.
