Sir John Fenwick (1579-1658), 1st Baronet of Northumberland was Master of the Royal Stud and surveyor of the royal race for Charles I; he sold several mares to the Royal Stud at Tutbury, likely from Spanish and Italian origins. His horses were referred to as the Fenwick Breed, and according to the 1st Duke of Newcastle he had "...more Rare Running-Horses than all England besides, and the most part of all the Famous Running Horses in England, that ran one Against another, wer of his Race and Breed". The Fenwick Barb was probably imported by and owned by Sir William Fenwick (1617-1676), 2nd Baronet, and after his death by Sir John Fenwick, 3rd Baronet, executed in 1697 for Jacobite sympathies.
