| 1/11/1990: Jockey Sylvester Carmouche commits one of the greatest frauds in horse racing at Delta Downs. Believing the dense fog will conceal him, Carmouche holds Landing Officer, a 23–1 underdog, at the gate, and sprints to the finish as he hears the other horses approaching. Landing Officer “wins” by 24 lengths, a protest is filed, and the pair is disqualified. Carmouche claims innocence, but is suspended for 10 years. After he admits to the ruse, the suspension will be shortened to 8 years.
