I thought I heard that there still may be a bone fragment seen with MRI in the spinal cord. Prayers that they can remove it and when the swelling goes down the feeling may return. Of course, his career is over but at least I hope that there is some chance that he can recover. How tragic. I hope that the Disabled Jockeys Fund/Jockeys Guild/Don MacBeth will be able to provide some help. He was a successful jockey but no one ever has enough money for these medical bills. There are usually some fundraisers after these tragedies, but there's never enough.
"When I am on my deathbed, I imagine I will say, 'Thank God I did that'" - Arthur Hancock, on buying back Gato del Sol from Europe after Exceller was killed in a slaughterhouse in Sweden.
I had wondered if the owners of the very sadly deceased Born To Be, would help the family out at all?
I don't know if that is an unheard of thing to do. I feel so so bad for Rene Douglas, his wife and is children.
I couldn't even imagine the stress & heartache, that he & his wife must be feelng. Very tragic.

I would think/hope their is insurance in Illinois for jockeys that would cover this. If there isn't it's wrong. This is a workers comp related injury.

Jamie Theriot i am sure made that move with no intent of hurting anyone.. that is race riding .. i am devastated for what has happened to Rene Douglas, & it was horrific seeing Born To Be go down as she did. That said the standard rules have to apply as they always do. No one could have foreseen what unfolded.
Imagine how Jamie Theriot must feel knowing he is responsible, he has to live with that the rest of his life. He isn't a monster, he made a decison as a competitive jockey as many have done before him and it had catastrophic consequences. In that business it CAN happen to any jockey.
Very Sad for all concerned him included.
