From what I understand the horse Jamie Theriot was on pulled and Rene's horse clipped her heals. I noticed the Stewards took Theriot's horse and placed him last. For Theriot's sake, I hope it was good hard riding and not careless riding.

Finally watched the replay and Theriot did attempt to move off the rail. It wasn't a severe move and I would have to say it appears there was quite a bit of aggressive movement from several riders including Douglas when the incident occurred. It was a perfect storm.

I thought I heard that there still may be a bone fragment seen with MRI in the spinal cord. Prayers that they can remove it and when the swelling goes down the feeling may return. Of course, his career is over but at least I hope that there is some chance that he can recover. How tragic. I hope that the Disabled Jockeys Fund/Jockeys Guild/Don MacBeth will be able to provide some help. He was a successful jockey but no one ever has enough money for these medical bills. There are usually some fundraisers after these tragedies, but there's never enough.

I had wondered if the owners of the very sadly deceased Born To Be, would help the family out at all?

I don't know if that is an unheard of thing to do. I feel so so bad for Rene Douglas, his wife and is children.

I couldn't even imagine the stress & heartache, that he & his wife must be feelng. Very tragic.

I would think/hope their is insurance in Illinois for jockeys that would cover this. If there isn't it's wrong. This is a workers comp related injury.

I would hope so too. But he is only 42 and with lose of his earnings and potential earnings.. Now that i think of it i am sure all or most jockeys would carry insurance for disability. ?

so the database says Born To Be was euthanized but the second link is dispelling that rumor. is she dead or alive?

Its very sad to hear about the jockey, my thoughts and prayers are with him.

Jamie Theriot i am sure made that move with no intent of hurting anyone.. that is race riding .. i am devastated for what has happened to Rene Douglas, & it was horrific seeing Born To Be go down as she did. That said the standard rules have to apply as they always do. No one could have foreseen what unfolded.

Imagine how Jamie Theriot must feel knowing he is responsible, he has to live with that the rest of his life. He isn't a monster, he made a decison as a competitive jockey as many have done before him and it had catastrophic consequences. In that business it CAN happen to any jockey.

Very Sad for all concerned him included.

It's like two cars merging into the same lane at the same instant - just a Very Unhappy Accident. I don't think James Theriot deserved a suspension.
