His half brother is a different story...he sires plain looking horses, but they stay sound. This broodmare is unraced, so I'm thinking of a cheap stallion that throws some soundness - Pioneering fits the bill. His best 2007 runners are all 5 and 6 year olds.
I think being a half brother means only so much. Is Storm Bird the tree of the poisonous fruit? Who knows.

I agree with you. I love Pioneering, and I think he's a good option to bring soundness. Since this mare is unraced and since she seems to have some trouble throwing foals that make it to the track (that mating to Fu Peg might have been a bit misguided), I think she needs a sire that gets some sound runners. If the mare stays in KY, I like Bright Launch as well. Is she's going back to CA, Roar gets some sound runners (but $7.5K may be a bit steep, since she cost less than half that).
More info
Ironically, I bought the mare off a lady I know, so I was able to glean a bit more info on her, post-sale.
I don't know anything about the Gone West, but the Fu Peg colt sold as a weanling for $70,000, then $10,000 as a yearling (ouch). He's now a stallion in Texas, standing for $1,000 and he got 10 mares last year (his first season).
Don't know what happened in '03 and '04, but her '05 Deputy Commander filly sold for $25K as a weanling, then $85K as a yearling. She's made 2 starts, has one second in MSW company, and looks to have a bit of talent.
The Johannesburg colt sold for $25K as a yearling. She slipped to Orientate last year, and to Artie Schiller this year.
The mare will stay in Kentucky. We have all the vet records, and think we found out how we'll need to breed her (lights, oxytocin and Regumate). Her babies (when she has them) sell well, so they must be nice looking individuals (as is she, typical Slew body with big shoulder and hips - very correct). In this case, I don't follow the rule of thumb on purchase price determining stud fee. I'm willing to go to $20K for the right stallion and the right deal.

I don't mean to argue, Petersd, but you write:
And then later write:
How do you reconcile the two?
