eek - epiphysitis/ toeing in!

Postby Mood Swings » Fri Jul 20, 2007 9:41 am

I have a gargantuan filly that has developed epiphysitis. She is also toeing in (partially due to the epiphysitis).

She is on stall rest, getting a joint supplement, foal aid, bute and is on a low calorie fortified feed. What else can I do? What about the toeing in? I have a hard time accepting that nothing more can be done

Thank you for any advice :)

Sorry I missed this - not that I'm an expert or anything.

Your farrier is your best friend - can't they trim to correct the toeing in? How about some equilox to correct the problem?

For the epiphysitis we use mud on their legs - it helps cool them down and it also as a side effect helps with fly control which in turn helps with the feet (less stomping). You could also try some Surpass (?) gel form bute under the mud on the affected joints.

Just a thought - hope it helps. And let us know how the filly does!

Butecort sweats work well for pain relief from epiphysitis.

Keep her feet level, and her toes squared off. Corrective trimming causes the bones in the fetlock to develop crooked, instead of lined up in a stack. I can't think of a better word. This per Larry Bramlage, at an AAEP event.
