Thank you, Roguelet - this is GREAT news!!!

I'll give you 3 guesses who bred Carson City's 2nd dam, Summertime Promise. No, it wasn't Phipps. No, it wasn't Greentree. Now...think!

Paul Mellon?

Correct! Now who owned her when she raced(no cheating i.e. googling). Hint: He was from Omaha and had a Preakness winner in the mid 80s.

Isn't Summertime Promise the filly that got Jack Van Berg into the Hall Of Fame? I always thought so! LOL!

Now, let's see...if this owner still used Van Berg, he would have won the Preakness with some earmuffed horse named Gate Dancer, right? So, I'm guessing the owner was named Opstein?

I don't know, but I did think Gate Dancer's earmuffs were cool.

Correct. Kenneth Opstein was a pretty big player at the yearling sales in the early 70s and into the early 80s owning several nice horses along the way the best of which were the aforementioned Gate Dancer and Summertime Promise.

Now, what trainer did Opstein bring out of retirement when he decided to get into the horse business in the early 70s?

Hi Horsenuts. I'll admit I used my "phone-a-friend" on this one. (this guy knows EVERYTHING about EVERYTHING....everybody seems to know someone like that).

He told me that Mr Opstein once had a horse named Destroyer that won the Santa Anita Derby, trained by MC Sims. Is that the correct answer?

MC "Monti" Sims would be correct. And Destroyer was a very nice horse. Van Berg took over for Sims in the later 70s.

Maybe. What was the name of Iron Leige's groom as pictured in the 1957 edition of Sports Illustrated shortly after he won the 'Derby.

Lawrence Fitzpatrick, I believe. If I'm wrong, let me know and I'll ask him.

Here's a question that maybe 1 person in 10,000 can answer (no lookups!!!):

What apprentice rider rode Affirmed when he broke his maiden?
