Island Fashion retired

Postby Heidilady » Thu Feb 22, 2007 1:16 am

Well now here's an iron lady hitting the shed. 30 races, won major races, faced the boys with a lot of heart. She and Azeri have dates with the same fella. That Storm Cat's a playa. ;)

With Petionville doubled to Buckpasser, Island Fashion is so right for a Hail To Reason stallion. I guess they're hoping for another Mr Sekiguchi.

True, and because of Woodman so close probably More than Ready isn't a good date. Arch is also out because of the close-up line on Danzig. I don't think the Storm Cat mating is a bad one, though. I'd say to go for HTR on the damline and head to El Prado. I wouldn't necessarily say they're looking for anothe Mr Sekiguchi, although I would say they're making a good business decision.

Although she is the first daughter of Petionville to be on his dance card, Storm Cat over Seeking the Gold has been a very useful cross, to the tune of two millionaires and quite a few $100k plus runners. On top of that, progeny of Storm Cat over Seeking the Gold mares have been useful in the breeding shed later on--think Pure Prize and Storm and a Half of the boys, and Storm Cat daughters producing the likes of Windrush (by Seeking the Gold), Woke Up Dreamin, Speightstown, and Sky Mesa. This is the mating where so long as the foal has four legs pointing in the same direction they win...colt in the sales ring, and a terrific foundation broodmare prospect for a filly.

Hi Kimberley. I agree with your points, but I was thinking maybe Dynaformer. That would give the foal a Mr P line stallion on the bottom of Hail To Reason much like Barbaro.

Breeding to sell is another story...I guess there's only one way to go.

If im breeding to sell and I own Island Fashion she'd go straight to Storm Cat as well. Its not a bad cross (in fact there's quite a few positives) and you have a great chance at hitting a homerun at the sales.

I respect Dynaformer as a top tier, elite stallion, but Storm Cat is two years his senior (doesnt sound like much but at this age, it is) and they've already started to reduce his book. He wont be around for much longer.

Island Fashion's owners have stated her new purpose is commercial breeding, so what exactly is wrong with going to the most popular commercial sire in the world?

Nothing whatsoever. Like I said earlier, even aside from the commercial aspect I think it's a very good match.

That said, I doubt she will visit him every year (particularly since he is getting up there), so I was idly speculating about who might be a good mate for her. El Prado and Empire Maker immediately come to mind.

Empire Maker? Ack! Why would you want to poison her with a bad footed Unbridled?

Juddmonte sure has given him some good mares though....

But I agree Rokeby, Island Fashion can go to any stallion, so why go to a question mark like Empire Maker.

I like the suggestion of Dynaformer.

And what about the Seattle Slew line?

Would you suggest AP Indy or Vindication? I'd take Dynaformer over both in a heartbeat!

AP Indy is a top class sire, but too many of his foals are too big and/or too unsound for my liking. Just IMO...everyone has one. LOL!

The real question is...at Storm Cats age, who really really believes he is live covering over a hundred mares a year?
