Not a great year for our horses - lost a colt tonight
My mare was due this coming week - she's had a good size bag for over two weeks, was being very quiet this past week and we knew she was close. Started this afternoon and was having a horrible time - up and down and lots of pain. She had a huge colt (our Real Quiet baby) but he didn't make it. The vet is still not sure what happened - was it when she went down or just another horrid horse event.
With the bad farm almost killing my little miracle girl, Pattie; the bad trainer ruining my 2 yr. olds knees and now this - I'm not sure how much more I can take. We're just praying that our mare is OK - she had lots of tearing and is so very tired. Also hasn't passed her placenta. What a business we're in, huh? It just pulls your heart apart.
Coming here to share the heartbreak and tears is better than a drink.

Oh, that's terrible. I'm so sorry to hear about the poor little guy, and the mare too. Just think, if there's any truth to the saying that bad things come in three's, you're done now and things will get better from here.

bt - so terribly sorry to hear the news. Hopefully the mare will be fine and you can figure out what went wrong with a necropsy maybe - did the vet think it was a red bag or anything? Sometimes you just don't know and sometimes that is the hardest part. Times and periods like this make you wonder why you stay in the business huh? Trust me - I know - if you want to hear my tale of woes or just vent to someone who has had more than their share of bad luck PM me sometime - I have horror stories and people ask why I am still trying to hang in there - but some days - seeing the mares in the field or going down to the barn at night when they are in there and hearing the noise and the smells makes all the hard work worthwhile. Not to mention I can bit** all I want and they don't talk back!
Hugs to you - better things are around the corner - I feel certain of that.

My heart aches w/yours...
btcountess,
I read your message w/ache in my heart for you and your horses...nothing is harder, in my humble opinion, than the planning of the breeding, care and constant watch of the mare, the anticipation of the baby, and then the heartbreak, when it does happen...
I keep telling my husband, for some reason this year seems particularly hard on mares and tough for the foals...why is this...???
I agree w/the other poster, though, that bad things do come in three's and this will signal the end of the bad for you...
You and your horses are in my thoughts-wishing you all the strength there is to get past the ache...one day at a time...

Thanks to everyone
This message board has meant so much to me - everyone has been so caring and given me such good information and hope. We can use all the prayers we can get.
Just got back from visiting and have some more info: When her water broke on Fri., the baby started down the birth canal and his head was out but she was up and down in extreme distress and having no contractions. So not sure what happened to him - compression on his chest in the canal? No, it was not a red bag - they gave her drugs (lots) and she passed the placenta on Sat. - today she started having contractions and waxing. She's a great mom but has never had any maternal feelings of loss - the vet said it was like a physical relief after he was finally out. They are doing a necropsy and running all kinds of tox screens. One thing that we know is that she is very, very calcium dificient - some lack in the beginning? She spiked a high temp yesterday and Bonnie started her on a stronger antibiotic and her fever came down. She's still not herself, listless and not eating up. I was so upset when she only took three baby carrots today. She's normally a huge carrot eater. Will post again when we get the final results and again, thanks so much for being such a caring "family".
