Please check out this link on chron of horse, and if any of you folks are nearby and can help or offer advice or a nurse mare or contacts, let this poster know? I will duplicate this in the Foal section.
This colt was orphaned when his mom torsioned today and was euthanized - he had milk at 1pm, says the poster. Needs a surrogate or additional help

Poor orphaned palomino foal out of TB mare today
Some people are like slinkies. Not really good for anything, but they bring a smile to your face when pushed down the stairs.
We used a nurse mare out of KY - cost was about $2,000 I think. Plus we had to get her back in foal before we sent her back (used the farm's teaser stallion - THEY love nurse mares!).
I saw on another forum that someone used a goat to feed a foal and it actually worked
Hope the guy does well.

clh (those are my initials, by the way!) how does one find the nurse mare and contact someone for those arrangements? Who, etc? Can you give any more info or give a name of someone who might know?
Thanks

I think there is a nursemare farm out of Paris Ky that advertise in bloodhorse. I had 3 orphans last year and ended up feeding them by the bottle/bucket very time consuming, but until they can locate a mare Foal Lac is a very good product, the other main one Mares Match my babies did not like at all. As a side note all 3 of my orphans survived and are the same size or bigger than the same age that were on their dams.

I have noticed in the Breeding section on COTH, there is a husband/wife team who post that run a nurse mare operation. Have they responded to any of the posts on COTH? Unfortunately, I don't remember their names....Also, last year Country Life Farm had a foal that was orphaned within a day of being born. One of their barren mares, adopted the foal, started producing milk (don't know if she had "help" to start that), and nursed the foal. I would guess there was milk replacer fed to some extent too. Perhaps, y'all could contact them regarding their experience last year? If you look at their '06 foal pictures, you can see pics.
Best of luck...hope the little one does well!

I will send you a PM with the phone numbers that I have. Also depending upon where this foal is at they could contact their vet/clinic - that is who has supplied me a list of nurse mare contacts.
Check your private messages though.
The nurse mare we had was a paint and although it took three days for her to accept the foal she became a very good nurse mare. My mare had fractured her pelvis and could not support the foal. After the nurse mare and foal were turned out with the other mares and foals and the babies got a bit bigger and would start to run with their mommas - the poor paint couldn't keep up with the other thoroughbreds - but the baby would run with the herd and holler for her "momma" to "come on and hurry up"
