Kitten's Joy

Postby sunday_silence » Sat Mar 31, 2007 4:03 pm

How do you all like his chances to be a successful sire? El Prado is unproven as a sire of sires and has several promising sons who've entered stud in the last few years, so we'll have to wait and see on that. But, he has produced horses who excel on both surfaces, routers and milers with speed.

Kitten's Joy has a nice female family, with his dam producing both him and GSW Precious Kitten, and his SW 1/2 sister Justenuffheart producing G1 winner and champion Dreaming of Anna and SW Lewis Michael.

I saw Kitten's Joy last week and he had matured considerably since the last time I saw him. He's gotten quite massive in the hip and shoulder. He is leggy, but fairly well-balanced. He is slightly back at the knee and toes in just a bit on the left front and out a bit on the right rear, but he seems to walk through these flaws fine.

I was curious to see him walking, after watching that semi-disastrous walking video on the TT Stallion Directory site. They should really get rid of that, because it's not flattering. He has a pleasant personality, alert and inquisitive, with just enough "attitude." He hasn't forgotten that he was a star, but is sweet tempered for a stallion.

He got a book of 130 or so last season and has a sizable number of mares booked to him this season. So, he's not lacking support. At $30,000, he's priced a little on the high side. With the all-weather surfaces taking off like gangbusters, he may be a young sire to watch. How commercial he'll be is a mystery,

what sort of size is he? Alot of Sadlers Well's line horses have been on the small side. Also has he got a big engine room?

I think he's around 16.2. Not sure if you're wanting to know about his butt or his chest and heart girth. I thought he was fairly deep chested and his butt was decent sized, but not huge, in proportion to the rest of him. I have rear and front view photos if you're really interested. He's started to look like a tank. If you'd asked me to describe him based on my first viewing a year and a half ago, I would've used the word "slight." I just hope they watch him so he doesn't turn into a porker like El Prado. He doesn't have the big, flat turf feet that El Prado does. Powerscourt fits the typical Sadler's Wells line mold. He hadn't filled out that much between Jan. '06 and Jan. '07. He still looks diminutive. The other El Prado sons I've seen, Medaglia and Artie, both have pretty good size and bulk to them, though.

Isn't it wierd how different El Prado is to other Sadlers sons, we have a stallion who has been a really excellent contributer here called Scenic, he gets big roomy horses.

Better credentialed sons that are in the Sadlers mould just don't seem to work outside of europe (with the exception of Carnegie who is an archetyple sadlers)

I think that he'll get a reasonable book of mares because of his talent on the racecourse and his championship. But, because of his turf prowess and the fact he wasn't a speedy horse on the dirt, his progeny might suffer. His female family is very stamina-oriented (although it has Dreaming of Anna, his second dam produced grade I turf router Down the Aisle and his family includes Spectacular Bid). Overall, his female family produces very good racehorses, but not great sires.
