Texas Two-Year-Olds In Training Sale Breeze date Apr 1

Postby cewright » Wed Mar 28, 2007 11:35 am

I am planning to go watch some of the horses breeze. This will be my first time at an event like this. Any advice? At this point I am not looking to buy a horse. Rather, I am trying to understand these sales.

Thanks

Chuck

I wonder if there is any significance to the fact that the under tack show was on April Fool's day?

Dont bring a stopwatch. Watch the action. Watch the movement of each horse, see which horse moves you. Pick the top 5 you would like to have bought, sniff around, see how they sell. Soak it all in, talk to the consignors about the horses you like, ask about the vet work, see the reports... they should be happy to share what they know. Drink lots of coffee. Enjoy the day. Listen to the horses. Talk to the horses.

After, you can take the top 5-10 and follow their career. Try and develop an eye. I spend hours watching replays, slow motion replays and live just trying to see what the real horseman see. I have watched thousands and i am still quite clueless.

I know the really good horses have 4 legs, of that i'm 90% sure.

Ah but dray, remember Red Pollard's famous quote about him and Seabiscuit - 'We've got four good legs between us'.

Even in Texas, horses show in :10 and :21.....those bunnyrabbit works are becoming more the rule than the exception.

I have noticed that horses who amble around in the paddock—loose, swingy stride, even slightly gangly and goofy looking, ears wobbling every direction, looking like a Golden retriever puppy, seem to win by a mile.

Did you enjoy the Sale? I thought there were some nice horses going through today.

I enjoyed the whole process. I followed the advice of Sangue Vecchio and kept my hands firmly in my pockets. I agree some very nice horses went through the ring. I think the consignors were rewarded for quality, particularly if they had a Louisiana bred. One of the horses I was following was a Siphon filly which sold in the TX yearling sale for $45K. She ran a 10.0 and sold today for $115k I believe. A nice profit for the consignors!

I think I will also follow dray33's advice and follow the careers of some of my other picks. The were a lot of no sales and outs so I don't know how everyone made out. I know one trainer from LA who brought over 2 and didn't sell either one at the sale.

Chuck:

Go here and you can find out the names of the horses once they are named:

Don't bring a stopwatch? Dray, either you have finally come to your senses or don't own any horses in this sale. Aren't you worried the NATC might get wind of your sudden about-face?

Neah. Why bring a watch? I have faith in the times posted... I dont have faith in my ability to pick out good horses however. The best way to develop the "eye", I hope, is to flex that muscle as often as possible. That's why I suggested he accepts the facts, and studies the magic.

I know you want to reopen dialog in regards to the yearling vs. 2YO market (or breeders vs. pinhookers). Dont worry... we're about to.

Well, I didn't get to go to the sale. It is not the same on a computer! It seems to me that there were several very nice horses on offer. The number of outs and no sales was high. The prices were low. Somebody got some good bargains -- only time will tell us who. It makes me wonder why I breed, when you can get a nice two year old, almost track ready for so little money. You can't raise them for that.
