Re: BARRETTS' MAY SALE--DO FASTEST WORKOUTS SPELL SUCCESS?
CA Michael wrote:Two months ago the group I'm involved with compiled the fastest workouts from each of Barretts' March 2-y-o in training previews since 1999 then correlated them with each horse's career earnings. halo,
thanks for filling in some of the blanks for us. In compiling our list we used the earnings from the 2006 APR and this site's Pedigree database, knowing that they wouldn't be up to the minute accurate. I'm relieved to see that the newer totals you posted don't make a substantive change in the overall picture.

halo,
re: your 'study' of the 2003 Barretts sale:
You can't be serious in drawing any conclusions from the information you posted. You listed several dozen horses from a single year; our study encompassed hundreds of horses over an eight year span. If you want to do the work as we did in fully researching the issue, you need to spend more than a half hour. Even if you do that, however, I would take issue with your sole criteria of selling price. Who said that the highest priced horses are the most likely to succeed? Not me! Nor are the lives and careers of the top priced yearlings put at risk as are the 2yo's which are forced to break the speed of sound in their previews.

2yo
But, Halo,
The broader point is that the 2yo sales often are not good for the horses, and hence, the buyers.
For instance, the high selling Sky Mesa colt ($650,000) sold by B. Thomas went in 10 flat.
Yet, she said in the Bloodhorse that the colt "is a big rangy, two turn horse". She also said his shins were too sore to go in the February sale.
A big two turn horse with sore shins should not be going 10 flat. There just isn't any way to suggest that such training can be good for this type of horse, is there?
Look at the works at Hollywood or anywhere else this time of year. Those horses are working two furlongs in 24 to 26 seconds, because their trainers are trying to get them to stay sound enough to race.
The trainer is also trying to teach a horse to relax and rate when necessary. A 10 flat 2yo may never be able to learn that. He thinks its balls to wall every time he goes.
If an exercise rider were to blow down through the lane in 20 and change, he'd be off the horse before he got back to the paddock.
And many of those horses are not two year olds, but older horses with mature growth.
For two year olds, it is just too much too soon.

halo is a member of the Ocala work-them-til-they-drop gang, so it's unlikely she'll have anything other than obtuse praise for the system you and I decry. The animals are just numbers on the wall to this brand of 'horseman.'
FYI, as I've mentioned before, our group is pledged to conduct the same "fastest workout" analysis before each of the Florida 2yo in training sales next year. We will be mailing and emailing our results to buyers from these sales for the last five years.
If time and energy allows, we will also break down the sales horses by CONSIGNORS. Buyers need to know which consignors' sales offerings show their best lifetime performances on preview day.
if possible can you tell us what the numbers are on the rest of the horses at the Barretts sale? this sale has been very succesfull and produced countless stakes horses , also if you run the numbers on all horses in all the yearling sales I would think the numbers would be worse ROI
turf,
Yes, its possible to compile the information you are asking. However, I can tell you that it would probably take a crew of five people a full 40-hour week to do so. Unless one has unlimited financial resources to purchase lifetime race records on several thousand horses, it's simply a matter of how much grunt work people are willing to donate for manual research and data formatting. "Running the numbers" really means "working the numbers!"
Would you like to volunteer to help?

Michael, your post has zero analysis. You took the top 50 horses and added yearling prices and race earnings, without drawing any conclusions. Inflammatory, with intent. This is exactly what you did the first time, drop incomplete/inaccurate data without any hypothesis, hoping to distort reality. Then you call people who disagree names. You failed to do the homework, and tell us what YOU thought the numbers meant and why. It takes time to delve through the numbers, and not just post them. I did, but even after showing you that nearly 50% of the horses from your first Barretts post either won black type or made back on the track what the owners paid, you still didn’t understand. Instead, your agenda was overshadowed by the obvious. Adds up to limited data thrown down to illicit a shotgun reaction.
I’ll go one step better. I am about to present conclusive data that shows that the 2YO sale is statistically a better place for BUYERS. It also, in fairness, answers some questions as to whether it is better for HORSES. It isn’t. If you thought about this smarter, instead of resorting to emotional trickery, you could probably accomplish much much more. I am sure that point will be lost on you, but I’ll explain. You would have little argument if you focused on the fact that the 2YO sale is hard on horses. Instead, you are trying to prove a point that isn’t there, by throwing out data that supports the opposite, in hopes that no one pays close enough attention to analyze it. Come on man. Truth is, the sale is good for buyers, at a cost to the horses. If you are merely trying to say that, you got me. Beyond that, the data suggests otherwise… and more.
I have no intention of hijacking this thread. I will open another in respect to your post.
One thing to add. I agree changes must happen in the 2YO sales. They should ALSO happen in the Yearling sales. Fortunately, we hear talk of Breeders policing their own, and working for change. Unfortunately, we do not hear the same rumblings from the NATC. I am working on that.

My my! Why are you so hostile, dray? Is it because a simple recitation of FACTS--i.e. numbers without spin--threatens the income you derive by the annual blasting off of legs and minds of your 2yo's in training???
And speaking of facts, this statement of yours IS NOT: "but even after showing you that nearly 50% of the horses from your first Barretts post either won black type or made back on the track what the owners paid...."
NOWHERE DID YOU PROVE THIS OUTRAGEOUS BOAST!!!!
YOU ARE A LIAR, dray 33.

The simple changes that needed in yearling and two year old sales are too obvious:
1) randomly drug test, yearlings and two year olds.
2) enforce a two minute clip rule for the breezes.
Heck, I'd buy a two year old then. Who wouldn't want a sound, good moving horse already started and going?
As Einstein said, "It isn't rocket science".
