Larry Jones' hat

Postby Rokeby Forever » Mon May 21, 2007 10:15 am

I think Ronnie Werner is the only guy that wears a bigger one, but what do you think of it?

I'd look like a moron wearing his hat. Do you think it does anything for him, or not?

He can of course wear whatever he likes, but it comes across to me as a cheap affectation. He came up with a quick look. Cowboy hats in Tbred racing strike me as "the wrong sport" is being portrayed.

Yup. My grandpa lives in east TX, and he's had some benign skin tumors removed. He goes for big brims to keep the sun off. I see them all over the place when I go down there.

Cowboy hats used to be pretty common among trainers 20 or 30 years ago, especially in the West.

Nowadays, I see lots of baseball caps.

Larry strikes me as a bit of a throwback in a lot of ways, and that's not a bad thing.

He's a throwback all right......even gallops his own stock since it better allows him to judge whether they're off or not. I bet he even spends a considerable amount of time under them as well. The sport needs more trainers like him and less guys who depend on the vet and excercise riders to make decisions.

The cowboy hat isnt nearly as bad as the spot coat he wore.

That is a rather elitist NY attitude. I have known a lot of old men wearing overalls that were the best horsemen I have ever met ( a lot of them could pull a wad of money out of their bib that would scare some elitists).
And, yes some wore a hat.

would you have said that if you didn't know I was from NY, I wonder?

I don't have anything at all against cowboy hats. I don't think it looks "genuine" on him.

In NY we have thousands of folks sporting various "looks" that we see every day, and some look comfy in their own style, and some look like they are affecting a look that's NOT really them. Larry strikes me as one of those. naturally I could be wrong.

I once saw Johnny Campo wear a cowboy hat. The key word is "once." He looked so stupid and got razzed by so many people, he never wore it again. It just doesn't belong on Brooklyn horsemen, I guess. LOL!

well I did say that I think of "wrong sport" when I see a T bred trainer wear one...perhaps "primitive" of me, but hey. I just think of quarter horses.
There used to be a great Country/Western bar around where I work (30's on the East side of Manhattan) called Denim & Diamonds. Was packed! So much for the elite NY-ers. 8)

I remember that place, Toccet. Billy Martin also had his Western Apparel store on 69th Street & Madison Avenue. And, I remember when Garth Brooks packed Central Park.

Wasn't the Country Music Award ceremony held in NYC in 2006?
