A funny story regarding me is a little different. My family has been breeding thoroughbreds for quite some time and I was essentially born into the sport.

It wasnt until I was about 8 though, that I decided I wanted to ride. So my dad buys two old riding ponies, both mares, for me and my older brother. Im all excited and go check her out in the stall.

The moment I walk up to it, she turns into some demonic beast. She was wheeling and thrashing and was truly trying to get to me through the stall door.

I freak, scream, my dad comes running in, lo and behold, the mean bitch goes quiet. She was just standing there like an old cow. I told my dad what happened and he proceeded to tell me that I dont need to make up stories if I was too scared to ride.

Well that pissed me off and I told him I wanted to ride her right then. He takes her out, again, she's completely calm, and he puts me on her back. He starts walking me around with her and she's acting like a lethargic leather bag.

He gets comfortable and goes back into one of the barns to check on another mare, and this beast from hell takes off as soon as he disappears. The next thing I know, im being rubbed off against the fence while she's running at full speed. Im screaming and then I blackout. I later found out she ran me into a tree.

So, everyone has decided that it was my fault again. As im arguing inbetween sobs, a chicken walks right in front of us and then in front of the mare. A split second later, there's a scream from the chicken, we turn around, and the mare proceeded to kill it and appeared to be eating it.

So yes, ladies and gentlemen, my first and only riding pony, is the world's only carniverous horse.

The old bitch is still alive and sequested from other horses (and chickens!!!), except for one old quarterhorse gelding who she seems to tolerate.

My dad thought about making her a nurse mare once (she's a full to a friend's nursemare)... then the chicken story came up and he decided against it. Lucky foal.

The question is, Maven, did you go on with learning to ride after that?

My only funny stories are being farted on by Crafty Friend (he owes me one) and my riding experience at 16...as a first-time rider. Horse did the under the tree branch thing (good thing I could limbo then) and when I had to re-mount, would stand stock still right up until that moment when you spring off the ball of the left foot from the stirrup to swing your leg over. He'd wheel in a tight circle. I'd try again.

Do all horses run their riders under a tree? Been there and done that - about 12 at the time. "Princess" (there's that girlie name and no I didn't name her :) - also ran me into a mailbox - still have the scar on my thigh to prove that! Of course had I been actually doing any reining and guiding we might have missed the stupid mailbox.

Did I tell you guys about the skunk in the barn last fall? Funny and true! I go to the barn to feed early morning and I see something behind the feed bucket - thinking it was one of the barn cats I started to reach down and pet it (I've done that in the dark with possums too) - anyhow, saw the stripe and thought - huh? My cats don't have a stripe and I knew what it was. So I march up to the house and tell my loving he-man hero to go down to the barn and take care of the situation - he looks at me like I'm an idiot! Says do you know what that smell will do to the barn - he'll leave on his own. So barn buddy and him are down there with the doors open see the skunk and says he left and close up the barn tight. I go down the next morning open up the tack room and a bag of feed is open and grain is on the floor. I now KNOW the skunk is still in the tack room. So I march back up to the house and say "surprise - he's still there". Did you actually see him leave the barn?" Well no, we didn't but the barn was open and we just assumed he left. Hero-hubby is still hemming and hawing - I'm telling him we've got to get the skunk OUT NOW. So we go in there fully armed with brooms  We look and look for him and can't find him anywhere - until I notice one of the bottom drawers is open a tad and I tell hero-hubby that I bet he's inside one of the drawers - he opens the top one - no skunk - he opens the second one and about has a heart attack. One of the mares got a hunk of tail caught in the fence and I kept it thinking I might need it before the sales to weave into the colts tails if they chewed each other's tails - and it was in that drawer - I thought he was gonna die. We laughed our a**es off. We then get to the bottom drawer and sure enough - curled up sleeping like a baby is the skunk :) We take the drawer out and he isn't going anywhere but inside the cabinet now. We're poking and prodding and he's hanging onto the broom handles and I'm waiting for the spray to come - IT NEVER DOES. Long story short we finally got him out of there - should have seen that little thing scurry up the hillside beside the barn when he finally left - but he kept looking back at us like we'd truly betrayed him by making him leave :) Saw a dead skunk on the road a few weeks ago and hero-hubby says - you think that was OUR skunk? I said was it white and black - he said yep, I said, probably was (HA). He live catches the racoons who get in and around our barn and takes them somewhere else and dumps them. My hero :)

Heard from the farm in KY and the Tapit filly is doing well - settling in and making some friends across the paddocks. Once the farrier is done with her and makes some adjustments she'll come back home :) I'll get some more pics of her then.

The Tapit filly is doing well. She has been officially entered in the September KEE sale but she is still in KY. The farm tells me I won't recognize her as she has grown alot and has really filled out. Hopefully her chest has broadened some as well. Am still hoping to get her home before I have to send her back for sales prepping :)

I'm not sure - about 30 days or so. We'll see what the consignor says when she sees her again. Although alot of the work had already been done - she was halter broke and lead really well (except with hubby), she let you groom her and was good with the farrier (she did not load well however - ha). We can do some of the prep work here if need be but not all of it. So if she doesn't come home soon we may end up keeping her there as late as it is getting :(

Here's an updated photo of the Tapit filly out of McCaskill. So far, she's still heading to the September Keeneland sale.
