UGUARD ????

Postby griff » Mon Jul 02, 2007 7:28 am

I have a 2 YO at the track and suspect she may be developing ulcers. She's still eating good and other than a recent personallity change is not showing any symptonms; however, her dam had ulcers when I bought her so i know it runs in the family.

my plan is to put her on UGUARD as a preventive measure but wondered if anyone has a better product or better solution.

GAstro Gard if you want to heal them. Ranitadine, cimetadine to treat the symptoms... Gut Protector is better than ugard...

Uguard

Diagnose first if possible, then treat. Why not scope for them? Costs a bit more, but then you know.
You might want to go with the Uguard you get from the vet (is formulated differently than over the counter, [aluminum I think]) for a test to see if it helps... or for cheaper, the quick test for ulcers is sodium bicarbonate--2 ounces over every feed for a few days and look for some changes. (Just don't run on it for fear of a milkshake +ve !)
If that works you likely do have ulcers, and now need to figure out why and/or treat them.
Instead of jumping to the Uguard, you might consider using aloe vera juice (gel) added to every feeding as it seems to have a ton of anecdotal support from those that have used it on ulcer treatment and prevention.

Pro-Bio K has come very well recommended to me, but I haven't used it yet. Much cheaper than Gastrogard. www.probiok.com

Gastro GArd the vet... it's expensive.

There are also some good herbal mixes around. Hilton Herbs from the UK do a really good mix which I've used with success.

Ranitidine has been a career-long "dietary" staple for our 6-year-old racemare. It comes from the vet and at least around the Chicago tracks, is pretty reasonable. Since she's still racing well with 43 starts under her girth, I wouldn't change a thing!
