Somewhere there was a discussion about Pleasant Tap as a great value for breed to race at $15K. There is a horse that moved to Buck Pond last year, too late to make the stallion register, but bred so incredibly similar to Pleasant Tap certainly he is worth considering at a $1K stud fee. His name is Stage Colony and he apparently was in California for many years but his owners moved here and brought him with them.
I was researching Pleasant Colony line sires as potential mates for my mare Miss Ballet, and came across Stage Colony. Since the Pleasant Colony line are all pretty much breed to race, I'm interested in opinions why Pleasant Tap is worth 15x the price....

He was a great racehorse, has been putting out graded stakes winners at a fair clip, and regular stakes winners in high numbers as well. And most from non-commercial mares for breed-to-race. He's a proven stallion, and has good connections at Lanes End. So he can command the fee among buyers/breeders who have their sights on the "big horse".

Often over the past year when I have been looking at the general sire list, one looks down the top of the list and sees fees of 4 bazillion dollars, 2 bazillion dollars, 6 bazillion dollars.....$15,000?....10 bazillion dollars..... Of course Pleasant Tap is the $15,000 anomaly up there usually, and that earnings record is what makes him, IMO desirable to many breeders (hopefully they understand the slow maturing aspect of his progeny though).
That being said, Stage Colony, although I haven't had time to look him up, does sound like an excellent prospect. Excuse my ignorance, but is Buck Pond in Kentucky?
There is a mare at Oakhurst Thoroughbreds in Oregon, called Army Brat - fairly good race record, and would have been better in my opinion if her connections had stretched her out. She's been for sale forever but they can't seem to get the price they want ($5000). Her sire was Thirty Six Red, who unfortunately died too young. He of course is the broodmare sire of Premium Tap.
I haven't looked at any of the other implications of an Army Brat/Stage Colony cross, but it did strike my mind as interesting.
Madelyn, what is it you like about Stage Colony for your mare in particular?

We started a dialog on this topic buried in the Keeneland Sales news thread. And Kimberly Mine suggested Out of Place for Miss Ballet rather than Stage Colony, citing that Out of Place/Krs S has produced some stakes winners (I think 5). In this case, though, Miss Ballet is actually a Moscow Ballet mare. Her dam is by Kris S. And Pleasant Colony on top and Northern Dancer on the bottom has produced THIRTY-NINE Group/Graded Stakes winners. When I expand to allow the reverse cross (ie: Northern Dancer on top, Pleasant Colony on the bottom) it has produced sixty-four Group/Graded Stakes winners. Look at Behrens or Lac Ouimet for an example. Nine of them are specifically Northern Dancer through Nijinsky. I don't see anything close to that with Out of Place.
What I like about Stage Colony for Miss Ballet is the extreme similarity of the resulting pedigree to that of Irish Bar, Bartok's Blithe and Bewitching Bartok, the three stakes horses out of her half sister, Merry Krisoke.. Miss Ballet is from the female family that produced Nijinsky, and so was the result of crossing her own female family back. So the additional return of Northern Dancer on the bottom of Stage Colony's pedigree could also be a plus. As I said, it is the same tail female as Jazil, Rags to Riches, Peeping Fawn, etc.
It's all speculation, though, and will depend on my cash flow next year. Obviously the offspring would not be a sale candidate.
And of course, the price..

I've seen quite a few of the Stage Colony's out here in California and they were classy runners. I was sorry to see him leave and think you could not go wrong breeding to him with the right mare.
Regarding his departure from California I haven't a clue other than he was considered by some out here as a horse with a non speed producing pedigree.

His owners moved to KY and brought Stage Colony with them. He is probably at Buck Pond as "a place for him to live" and I don't expect to see a lot of promotion going on. I just think with Pleasant Tap doing so well at $15K, he is worth a look at $1K. I am certain Stage Colony NEVER got anything along the lines of the mares Pleasant Tap has had.
