Pedigree Analysis - 4 CANTER NE-Listed Mares (thanks, Hank!)

Postby Waquoit » Fri Aug 17, 2007 12:05 pm

The very generous pedigree guru "Bluegrass Hank" has kindly delved into the pedigrees of some of the mares being offered for sale on the CANTER New England trainer listings page (http://www.canterusa.org/newengland/sale/trainerlistings.htm).

Hank has a real heart for these horses, and is using his writing and pedigree analysis skills to help get them exposure from the racing breeding world. I thought I'd post Hank's great writeups here for everyone to read. Thank you, Hank! :D

_______________________________________________________________

"Few pedigrees can compare to SMOTHEREDWITHLOVE. Seven of her eight great grand dams are legendary producers, the other is the grand dam of Horse of the Year and thoroughbred legend Holy Bull, so truly all 8 are legendary. This good looking girl is bred in the chips, was an honest runner, is well conformed and is ready to be an asset to any breeding program. All she needs is to be SMOTHEREDWITHLOVE and attention and then be bred to the right stallion. Then you, as her new owner, can be "smothered" with positive return on your investment.

Instead of attempting a Waffle House reference, let's look at SMOTHEREDWITHLOVE's exceptional pedigree and determine some suitors for her. After all, her situation may be urgent.

By General Royal, the talented son of A.P. Indy from a dam that is a daughter of legendary producer Too Bald, from the female family of Holy Bull, there are several ways to maximize this girl's pedigree. This family screams for the turf and provides the benefit of early speed, to boot. As you can imagine, with a family like this there are plenty of potential crosses that offer great potential. Mr. Prospector, Roberto, Silver Deputy, Theatrical, Danzig, Maria's Mon, Seeking The Gold, Storm Cat and Relaunch sire lines would cross well with her. Still, I think some specific stallions could be very interesting to try in order to breed for turf races at or about a mile in distance for this mare.

SMOTHEREDWITHLOVE gets a coveted A++ Werk Nick rating when crossed with Dixieland Band line stallions. Bowman's Band in Kentucky provides a beautiful cross. Saint Ballado line stallions score an A++ here as well, this girl produces boffo numbers with promising young stallion Star Dabbler, but I would LOVE to see her bred to the multi-talented and good looking Sunriver upon his retirement. Hap or Monarchos may produce an interesting foal at a fair price, as Theatrical and Maria's Mon cross well here, also. Other excellent potential crosses with this mare are with sons of Baldski or Capote, to line breed to Too Bald, Mull Of Kintyre is very interesting, with turf speed and line breeding to Hidden Talent in mind. Crossing up Holy Bull with this family may work well, but look more toward Woke Up Dreamin, to capitalize speed, when considering sons of Holy Bull. Spendthrift Farm offers Osidy, a young son of Storm Cat, which may provide the best match of all, as he was a turf sprint specialist and would offer a Secretariat cross and line breeding to My Charmer, dam of Seattle Slew and Seattle Dancer.

So much potential, so many possibilities for this girl. This is the first time a pedigree has given me a headache from having so many different directions to consider! Now comes the important part, get in contact with a CANTER volunteer and get this girl home! Smother her with love, make her yours, breed her early next year and prepare for a foal with excellent potential!"

"The young, classy mare NICELY ACCEPTED could provide breeders a unique opportunity to acquire a nice mare at a reasonable price. A sweet mare, with good looks and bloodlines, NICELY ACCEPTED crosses well with several diverse bloodlines. With 42 starts and earnings of over 90000, NICELY ACCEPTED was sound and classy. By Acceptable, an underrated son of Capote out of a stakes producing young Wild Again bloodlines, NICELY ACCEPTED would allow regional breeders a chance to get a Kentucky quality mare at a reasonable price and allow Kentucky breeders a chance to acquire a mare with synthetic track bloodlines that would be an asset to any broodmare band.

First off, NICELY ACCEPTED has black type under her first dam, as her half sister by the good looking West Virginia stallion Valiant Nature is a stakes winner. NICELY ACCEPTED produces a coveted A++ Werk Nick rating with stallions who are by the late Runaway Groom. Some prominent stallions by the late Runaway Groom (who beat three classic winners in the same race) are Cherokee Run, Wekiva Springs, Down The Aisle, Najran or Groomstick. This mare will match well with Cherokee Run's sons Kafwain and Zanjero down the road, as well. Rasmussen Factor breeders should be interested in NICELY ACCEPTED, as well. Sons of Broad Brush allow linebreeding to Hidden Talent, Will's Way provides the RF through Willamae and Osidy allows a very interesting line breeding to My Charmer.

Other stallion lines that match well with this good looking girl include Distorted Humor, Honour And Glory, Fusaichi Pegasus, Storm Cat, Carson City, Deputy Minister, Forty Niner, Holy Bull, Smart Strike, Kingmambo and Nureyev. There should be something for everyone to like about this mare. Take a chance on this mare, I have a feeling she and her babies will be NICELY ACCEPTED at the sales in the future!"

"If you can look at the picture of CRAFTY JEN on the canterusa.org website and not want her, go raise cats. What a lovely mare! By former Claiborne Farm stallion Take Me Out from a young Alydeed mare, CRAFTY JEN also has genetics on her side in order to become an amazing broodmare. Turf or synthetic breeders take notice, this mare is well bred for the grass and is "poly-friendly".

CRAFTY JEN crosses very well with several diverse sire lines. Take your pick and swing for the fences, this girl could produce any kind of foal! Previous success stories in CRAFTY JEN's family include breedings to A.P. Indy, Storm Cat and Forty Niner line stallions. Most people shopping for mares on CANTER may not be able to afford to breed to A.P. Indy, but his decendants Don't Get Mad, Stevie Wonderboy and Indy Mood may be able to deliver with CRAFTY JEN on a more reasonable budget. Fans of the Rasmussen Factor have some nifty opportunities with this mare, as you can line breed to Kankakee Miss with Came Home or any son of Phone Trick.

Young, up and coming Kentucky stallions Star Dabbler and Ten Centuries give an interesting opportunity to line breed to the great Pocahontas when mated with CRAFTY JEN. Vision And Verse allows line breeding to Bebopper. Other favorable crosses with CRAFTY JEN include sons of Kris S., Andromeda's Hero or sons of Pleasant Colony. Crossing CRAFTY JEN with Turn-to line stallions such as Eltish, Discover, Mongoose, Best Of Luck, Include, Repriced, High Brite or other sons of Saint Ballado, Broad Brush or Cox's Ridge would produce a very interesting cross, also. Kentucky Derby hero Giacomo also produces a 3x3 cross with Stop The Music, which may be interesting and yield a beautiful gray foal. Slew City Slew crosses well with CRAFTY JEN, but he seems to do well with most mares. Miswaki line stallions such as Waki Warrior, Concerto and Sir Shackleton yield a good nick rating, as well.

Regional breeders take a look. This mare can produce foals that would be successful on dirt, turf or synthetic surfaces. Give this girl a shot and reap the rewards. Check out her picture if you haven't already. If it doesn't steal your heart, you need a transplant!"

I think she could have some breeding potential—her tail-female family 8-f traces back to Firetop, Summit, Torpenhow. She is gorgeous either way (and big, at 16 1/2 hands & growing) and has a lot of potential for the right person! :D

Thank you, Skeenan! Debraella is incredibly levelheaded for a youngster. She seems to have that "nothing fazes me" kind of temperament.

Actually, all of the mares posted thus far have nice dispositions. I have to confess, Smotheredwithlove is my absolute favorite horse on the CANTER NE listings right now. She is really beautiful...you can tell by looking at her that she's a KY-bred. She stands out. And she has a certain presence about her, a combination of great manners and real poise. If I had an open stall in my barn (and won the lottery), she'd be coming home with me.

I would encourage anyone interested to call her trainer ASAP. He is in a big hurry to move a lot of his horses quickly, and Smothered needs (and deserves, as they all do) a good home, fast. :? . She'd make a remarkable mama with her breeding and conformation.

Anyone with questions about any of these mares, or who would like to arrange to come look at one or more with a CANTER volunteer on a Saturday morning, please feel free to PM me or e-mail me at [email protected].

Thanks again to Bluegrass Hank for applying his talents to helping these horses find homes!

Crafty Jen certainly has the pedigree to be a nice broodmare for someone if bred correctly. That page is rather young and it's improving pretty well. I believe Stonewall has the dam, which is only a plus.

She's the most interesting pedigree-wise for me.

Debraella's half-sister by Notebook, Milto's Express, recently set the track record for 5 furlongs at Arlington.

Here's a new one - and she's only $500 OBO!

Postby Waquoit » Tue Aug 21, 2007 7:49 am

Bluegrass Hank has taken a close look at the pedigree of another CANTER NE-listed lovely at Suffolk Downs. This mare is only 3 and has a great future ahead of her. Like Smotheredwithlove, she is in urgent need. She is priced at just $500 OBO, and has to move.

In Hank's words:

"GOLDEN ME, by the speedy, but ill-fated David (a flashy son of Mt. Livermore), carries some tremendous blood that makes her a wonderful broodmare prospect. A hard trying winner from a young family with potential, this good looking filly deserves a shot to make it in someone's broodmare band. To say that there are good stallion crosses for her would be like saying Barry Bonds has hit a couple of home runs. Kentucky, Indiana, Florida and New Mexico breeders take extra notice, this girl crosses well with a stallion very near you! She would certainly be a nice addition to a regional program and her sire David is going to be an underrated broodmare sire, with his versatile breeding for dirt, turf or synthetic tracks. GOLDEN ME's young female family is another attractive feature, as well. Her mother is only 7, and GOLDEN ME is her first foal. Look at her picture and of that shoulder! This girl will WOW you!

Breeders can go many different directions to maximize GOLDEN ME's wonderful, diverse pedigree. She gets outstanding A++ nick ratings with either the brilliant Candy Ride or any son of Unbridled's Song. Breeding recommendations (under 20000) would include: Value Plus, Candy Ride, Royal Academy, Holy Bull or Dehere. Horse Chestnut would produce an interesting cross, as GOLDEN ME is closely related to former Kentucky Derby pacesetter Spanish Chestnut. This mare crosses BEAUTIFULLY with the recently retired Songster, what a gorgeous baby that mating could produce! Breeding recommendations under 10000 would include: Songster, Unbridled Energy, Even The Score, Eurosilver or Bowman's Band. Under 5000 would include Elijah's Song, Horse Chestnut, Rocking Trick, Unbridled Time or Native Rhythm.

GOLDEN ME gives regional or commercial breeders a golden opportunity to get a nice broodmare prospect for a very reasonable price. This girl needs a home in :44 and change, a number you'll get very used to if you breed this mare correctly!"

Hi all,

Happy to report, Golden Me and Smotheredwithlove have found new homes today :).

Also, we learned today that Crafty "Jen"'s trainer had her name wrong when she gave us the listing - it's really Crafty JUNE:
