If anybody can help I am trying to save a 16 year old conquestador Cielo mare from being Euthanzied. It is a very long story but basically the owner has dumped her. She can no longer concieve well they tried for 2 years. She is a nice mare almost 17 hands , she is a little nervous but is respected in the heard. Never see her kick anyone or bite only to defend herself. Her name is Bonita Estrella. She is located in Ocala Florida. If anyone can help or has someone that would be willing to take her please email me at myheartsezyes @ msn.com (take out spaces) I honestly don't know how much time this person is willing to give me.

What a shame.

If this mare was near me, I'd take her... I'd just turn her out with Indy and see what happened. We always have a mare with him for companionship anyway, so that wouldn't be a big deal at all. He's VERY fertile and has been known to get the job done when others have not been able to; I have a lot of faith in his ability to do his job.

Then, if THAT didn't work out, there are always people here looking for riding horses... I know of 3 people looking right now.

But, Ocala's not very close to Indiana. Hopefully someone will be able to help.

Sorry to say this but most people looking for free horses cant afford them to begin with. The poor mare would probably be better off euthanized than to be put into a bad situation.

Sorry to say, but for all you know, that ad could be by a kill buyer. Not many people in their right mind would advertise that they're taking in ANY free horses. In my area, I'd be swamped with free-to-good home horses within the week.

It is not likely at all there is a kill buyer anymore in Florida, since the plants in Texas are closed and transportation to Canada or Mexico would be prohibitive. Since slaughter is banned now, there is no more threat and the conspiracy theories don't hold water. My local stockyard sale has gone from having a "low" price of $300-500 per horse to fifty bucks if you can get a buyer at all.

There is still a huge amount of trucking to MX and CA. There are trucks routinely (2-3 times/week) picking up in NC to ship to Mexico. CA meat prices (granted west coast) are also pretty high right now for some reason (I forget why).

Shipping to slaughter is not yet banned. I believe that Cavel is also still operating under an injunction (?) until their appeal is finished. That probably won't be decided until the fall.

But the trucking costs, with fuel over $3 a gallon, limits the horses "at risk" geographically, to those in the northeast, northwest, and southwest. Cavel is in Illinois.. same difference. No one in business to make money would be buying slaughter horses in Florida. And, as I said, we are lucky now to be able to get $50 or $100 for a horse, if a home can be found at all. People are starting, now, to turn unwanted horses loose on public lands. The anti-slaughter campaign was a rabid, under-thought, ill-conceived piece of sophomoric legislation, without making provision and establishing euthanasia stations where unwanted horses could be dropped off for euthanasia/incineration. Now, with the drought, and the dearth of hay available at almost any price, it will be interesting to see how many horses are just turned loose to starve to death in the national forests. Another repercussion may be that they will compete with the wildlife already there and the domino effect may be that the deer will starve too. Now isn't that a LOT kinder??

There are several kill buyers who operate out of Ocala. I would be very cautious in giving any horse away anywhere but esp. in Ocala. The KBs routinely make the rounds picking up cheap and free horses. There is one, forget his name, makes regular runs to NH and back. He brings horses up to sell and brings back mares for the ET business (several big ET "farms" in FL and they ditch the mares the minute they aren't productive). The horses just have more travel time now.

While I'm not naive and I know there are kill-buyers out there, let's not assume that these ads are written by them. There are many people with just one horse that may need a companion. When I moved here with my QH, we needed a companion for her and ended up getting a mini. I'm sure with a little investigation you could find out the motive of the individual seeking a free horse.
