Disco Rico to New York

I've always liked this horse. I think the move from Maryland to New York will be good for him. Anyone else have any thoughts about him?

And is he really as heavy boned as he seems to be in his Stallion Register picture?

Where did Disco Rico move to? I like him too....I especially loved his sire Citidancer. I'm in Maryland and have a mare with Lt. Stevens in her pedigree...I wanted to breed her to DR next spring to get the Rough Shod inbreeding.

He's moving to Keane Stud, Amenia. Check out this article from the Bloodhorse.

I too am a big fan of Citidancer, although I tend to think of him more as a broodmare sire.

The statistics from Equineline say that Disco Rico has an AEI of 1.42 vs a CI of 1.22 which isn't too bad, and for the current year his AEI is 1.75.

Looking at his winners this it seems as though the offspring tend to be relatively slow to mature. The list is dominated by three and four year olds, and the statistics show that he has had few two year old starters (although I'm not sure how quickly Equineline updates its stats)

I would have thought Disco Rico might get more exposure in New York than Maryland if incentives for breed to race are as bad in MD as people are implying in various other threads. He's not at all commercial though. I'd be curious as to whether people think this move is a step down for him or a step up. And is he likely to get a better book of mares in NY?

His current stud fee is $4000, and of course, although the move has been announced, a stud fee for $2008 hasn't.

I'd say in this case going MD to NY is a step up. The horse is definitely getting the job done for breed-to-race folks, and his offspring seem to win at a variety of distances and surfaces. Disco Rico seems to be the very definition of "useful." Considering the disarray in the Maryland program, and how nice the NY program is by comparison, it looks like a step up.

I agree with Mike. Disco Rico has done very nicely in Maryland -- and without a lot of ``hype.''

I don't know what kind of book he got this year or whether the addition of Cherokee's Boy -- another son of Citidancer -- to the Maryland stallion ranks might have affected it.

Well at 1.22, it's not the best book of mares I've ever seen, but it's not absolutely the worst.

Quite useful. I like the move for him and for the NY breeders as I am still disappointed by the NY stallion roster. With the influx of mares into the program, I am surprised that stallion sydicates have not made a concerted move yet. Does anybody have a mares-bred report for 2006 in NY? It would be interesting to see how the number stacked up vs. 5 years ago, and vs. the other secondary breeding states (ex. KY...ex Fl.). Maybe I dead wrong and the market can't support a strong 10-15k type of stallion.

After reading my post, I wanted to give a few examles of stallions that are very useful if not "rael strong", but tend to have to fight for mares because of the competition. These are a few that I think would be very interesting to NY breeders off the top of my head:

*Marquetry
*Military
*Concerto
*Sky Classic

I'm just naming the one's that I like for breed to race that are underutilized in their current home. I do not want to disparage the NY stallions, but I've got to think in that 7.5k-12k slot would be dominated by a couple of the above if they moved.

Also, I'm a bit surprised that a couple of new stallions didn't give NY a shot. Hook & Ladder has been well recieved...even Wheelaway gets mares. I would love to see a guy like Castledale start in NY instead of against the brutal KY competition.

Of your list, Matt, I love Marquetry, and I really hope for success for Wheelaway.

And a personal favorite of mine that I have hopes for is Here's Zealous.

Sounds good, Geo! And in the meantime, keep your fingers crossed that Basic Instinct is baking a nice Here's Zealous as we speak. Her 3-year-old filly, Basic Trick, ran 2nd last night at Meadowlands...now has 3 second-place finishes in 5 career starts!

That's great, Bargain, I really hope this horse does well. He looks good, he ran for a long time and stayed pretty sound, and he ran in graded stakes company. And my special favorite, he finished his career by winning an allowance, if I remember correctly.

How many runners does he have on the ground now?
