See Hip 66, Keeneland, for modern TB durability answer

Look at the "Short List" Thoroughbred Times Today for the photo of 66, bred by RD Hubbard.

This is a yearling? A Thoroughbred yearling? Something is wrong here, and it's ruining the breed. Breeders, so named commercial breeders, need to take an objective look at what they're producing, Does it look anything like a Thoroughbred horse of even 25 years ago, much less 50? How can it be surprising that these heavy monsters don't hold up?

I can't see the picture but I wouldn't get too excited by a single horse. This spring I visited a farm and saw a 17.1 hand daughter of Seattle Slew that looked something like a Percheron. I remember suggesting to the farm manager that they check the DNA again.

Ironically the breeder tried to scale everything down using a 15.2h stallion and got a filly so small that she couldn't sell. Opposites may attract but that's usually a lousy breeding theory.

I'm not excited by a single horse. Overall, this is the style that's being bred today, and this individual illustrates that effectively.

Do you have a link to the picture? I can't find anything marked Short List on The TB Times site.

I don't see a way to link to the page. It's the Sept 10 issue of The Thoroughbred Times Today, which is emailed to me.

$2M from Coolmore gang? He'll be in the stall next to TGM. What muscle will he pull?

LOL probably a lot of them if they don't put him on a diet!

Except for being too fat though I prefer seeing a well built horse than a fragile looking one.

If I am looking at the correct horse I understand why it brought so much money.. It's big but looks like t is correct.. more important it's a out of a g-1 stakes winning daughter of blushing groom with $785k in winnings and a 16/8/2/2/ race record/

Why do you think that breeding and race record will throw unsound get?? The top and bottom both ran very well and I believe both retired sound.

Souds like the stuff that makes champions.

That's the first time I saw him and I like what I saw. His page looks really impressive.

I like him too, he's an A.P. Indy and they are often big. I only hope whoever bought him realises he needs to mature and doesn't push him too quickly.

OK I must be a member of the great unwashed too. I see a well balanced individual with maybe a bit of a dip in his back who's bulked up to porky sales weight.

Nothing like the coarse 17 + hand Slew mare I saw or any number of other individuals who might be described as "un-Thoroughbred-like".

Of course, it's always hard to tell that much from a picture.

AP Indys are often pudgy...
