Maria's Mon & John Henry Updates

Hey all,

I can't confirm this, but I just heard that both Maria's Mon and John Henry passed away today!!!!!

Does anyone know more?

I had read in today's Herald-Leader that John Henry was being treated for dehydration, but my husband just called me from Keeneland and said that he's hearing that he passed away...so I am very shocked...

I know he was old, but I had just been hearing how well he had been doing, enjoying his walks, etc., but that is life, isn't it?

When I saw that beautiful cover story the Bloodhorse did on him a few weeks ago, I just knew it wouldn't be long. After all, he was a grand old 32. RIP, John. I saw you beat Silveyville at GGF and you were everything they said you were. :cry:

Surely they would have verified his latest condition before posting the first story on his condition.

I called the KHP to verify but no one answered by this time. I'll guess we'll hear more tomorrow...

Yes, I had the same morbid thought about JH after seeing the bloodhorse coverage and the features that popped up recently. Not that one can help but have them about any 30+ year old horse that is mentioned. Glad to see that he seemed to enjoy himself more at the end. It's good that he doesn't have to face another winter with the wet & cold weather that would prevent his walks and make his arthritis more painful.

Sorry to hear that Maria's Mon is gone at such a young age, though I'm glad the decision was made to euthanize him if he was suffering. Anyone have more details on what was wrong with him?

No offense, but I think the title of this post is in poor taste. I don't see why you would start a thread with a title stating something as a fact and then in the body of the post admit that you have no idea what you are talking about. Very uncool IMO even if it does turn out to be true about John.

Posted at T Times at 6:00 this evening is that John Henry is being treated for dehydration. What kind of person makes a post like this without confirming whether or not its true???

I saw him about 3.5 hours ago. He was receiving fluids and showing his age but very alive. JT

Ah, at last a first-hand update! Thanks!

To turn this thread around into something a little happier, let me share my memory of John Henry winning the GGF Handicap. We went to the track specifically to see him that day, and so did everyone else. In those days, the track got about 12,000 on the weekend, and I think there were about double there that day. He went around in true John Henry style, and when he crossed the finish line, he broke the track record. Silveyville chased him so hard, he broke the existing record as well, but was still beat about two lengths. McCarron brought John back, and he stood and stared at the tote board like he was famous for. The standing ovation from the crowd was thunderous. I have only heard applause like that for a horse twice in my life: that time, and seeing Doc Bar be paraded at the Grand National Rodeo. You couldn't hear yourself make a sound. It was very grand to see.

I remember when JH ran I believe in the Bud Mill. The race caller was saying that the "Old Man" as he was affectionately called, was not going to be there at the wire, when all of a sudden JH from 4th place made a run and as the caller was yelling sic. "the old man is on the move, he's going to win...as the caller broke down and sobbed. He said I'm sorry folks...

Saw JH in 2005 - we went to KY for our honeymoon. Glad to hear that fine old gentleman will live to see another day!

I heard that it was announced at Keeneland that he passed away.....anyone at the sale to verify????
