Question.. how can Pleasant Tap be such a success at stud, and his half brother, Go For Gin, be.. well.. i don't want to call him a dud, but he's not his half brother that's for sure.
Is CORMORANT that much of a downside to his pedigree?
Even with all that, he sired Albert the great
Go for Gin

Being brothers means as much in horses as it does in people. It can have some significance in mutual talents, or almost none.
Pleasant Tap is by what many consider a failed sire of sires, but Pleasant Colony was top class. Cormorant was a lot more "spotty" and more of a regional stallion, although one who was top notch.

Don't be so humble - you are not that great.

Satish Sanan paid $4.4 Million for half brother Colonial Boy as a yearling and he won one race in his career....being a half or full sib sometimes means nothing.
Cormorant was a foundation to the NY Bred program in the 1970s-1980s, and that's where Go For Gin should have stood stud. I think his stud career was terribly mismanaged.

apples and oranges.. we aren't debating on if the talent is there... go for gin won the kentucky derby for crying out loud.
both ovbiously had talent, yet one was a success and one was a flop at stud. that's head scratching.

I personally think they gave up on him too soon. Of course, when breeders stop calling to book their mares, stud farms start looking for more exciting prospects to fill their ads (I mean stalls). If you take away Pleasant Tap's offspring's Japanese earnings, his production record comes more in line with Go For Gin's.
A lot of people complain about all the inbreeding to Mr. Prospector, Northern Dancer, and Seattle Slew but Go For Gin is an outcross to all three.

yukidragon,
Love your reaction! He is a very good regional sire, nothing to the KY hardboots.
Well, I'm not breeding for a fashion show, I'm breeding to produce a racehorse and I'm considering him for my mare. I'm just waiting on Pin Oak Lane to revamp it's stallion roster to make my final assesment.
