Mating advice for...

Postby SCandproud » Thu Oct 11, 2007 12:04 pm

Thinking about breeding this mare to race: Curve Buster By Honor Grades out of Icy Folly by Icecapade. She'a 16.3 or.3 and pretty correct. She did have a condylar fracture right hind as a 2yd. at Keeneland after a work but other than that she was pretty sound. Thinking about a stud fee up to 10k. Any suggestions would be welcomed and thanks in advance.

I like Lost Soldier for your mare. He's a proven sire who can get a top class horse. There is some close inbreeding with this match (2x3 to Danzig) but remember, inbreeding doesn't create anything but only allows for sameness to occur. If that sameness happens to be racing brilliance you may have the genetic deck stacked in your favor..

You also return the sire, Lost Soldier to his dam's best blood via Secretariat. Secretariat's dam Somethingroyal, additionally, is duplicated through this match four times within seven generations via Big Red and his half brother, Sir Gaylord through his son, Drone..

nice pedigre with a stakes producing tail female.

Are you breeding to sell or race and where would you race if that is your goal?/

Although I normally second Keith with adding in the RF whenever possible, in this case, she's so heavily inbred/linebred, I'd suggest balancing the pedigree on top.

I really like her with Gilded Time. He's a very solid stallion that's a very good breed to race type, but also can get some nice prices at the sales. He's also a good looking horse and tends to throw good bone and angles from my experience.

Most of his best have brought in Bold Ruler, Nearctic and Native Dancer and that's exactly what he does with your mare (she brings in the Nearctic).

The Native Dancer is 4x5 through two daughters and the Bold Ruler is through two of his best racing sons in Secretariat and What A Pleasure.

The resulting foal should have a versatile aptitude and should be able to run on dirt, turf, and artificial. You would also have a very live broodmare prospect if it ends up being a filly.

If you're intent on going for an RF, I would recommend Mizzen Mast. He's a young stallion who is proving to be an up and comer of racehorses and they're running on every surface and doing it well.

I believe he's listed at 15k this past year, but if they dont drop him for 08 I'm sure you can deal him down to 10k.

The cross will give you 5x4 Blue Canoe and also add the sex-balanced Sir Gaylord 5x5 through a daughter and a son. Add in the fact that it brings in 3 lines of Somethingroyal, and it's a very strong pedigree match.
Don't be so humble - you are not that great.

Honor Grades likes Ribot bloodlines

Postby Keith » Sun Oct 14, 2007 4:58 pm

Honor Grades likes Ribot bloodlines when you consider

Adoration is out of a Key To The Mint mare

Honor Glide is out of a Run The Gantlet mare.

Ypu may consider bringing in His Majesty, Tom Rolfe, or Graustark bloodlines.

Silver Train would be an interesting cross line breeding Weekend Surprise 3x4. Silver Train is out of a Cormorant mare.

Stevie Wonderboy is by a son of A.P. Indy and line bred Weekend Surprise 3x3 so Silver Train may be an interesting cross.

Magna Graduate is by Honor Grades and out of a Fast Play who is by Seattle Slew.

Another stallion I would really consider woud be Don't Get Mad who is standing at Spendthrift for a reasonable price.

I would shy away from having too much Native Dancer and Nearctic.

I love her for Rocking Trick.. but I suppose I could be biased. Failing that, you might look at Albert the Great.

I suggested Alphabet Soup for this mare, as he would bring in a good cross to Blue Canoe, the cross to Sir Gaylord, AND bring in a cross to Ribot.

I second Maven on Gilded Time.

Keith spoke about Ribot. I agree with him.
Considering that your mare, her dam and 2nd dam show a poor production record, I think that a substantial outcross is a better idea for the mating.

So my advice is CETEWAYO.

Considering the Forty Niner/Danzig cross has been successful in the past, I like a son of Forty Niner. I think Sunday Break would be a nice fit, as he has the Ribot influence thru File, and the Forty Niner line seems to bring out the dirt influence. As an example of the cross, Sunday Break is one of the few moderately priced Forty Niner sons that *doesn't* already have a Danzig influence. Lastly, his 2yo's are selling at roughly 3x his fee median.
