Hey Roke, I saw that horse and he looks pretty nice overall (turns in). He was a $165,000 yearling, though Danzig was averaging $500,000 in that sale. When he shows he can consistently get runners, I'm all in. In the interim I took the opportunity to book your mare (Backyard Betsy) to Houston.

You know Roke, he has gotten some very nice runners, most recently G2 winner "Mystical Plan", etc. However looking at his APEX numbers from 2005 thru midyear 2007, he is not a standout.

Last year's stats on the CTBA site has numbers that don't seem to match up to what he has accomplished as of late. For example on last years CTBA online stallion directory has him (Thru 29 Oct 06) w/99 starters, 47 winners, & 75 wins (15%), all good, but the avg earning per starter was $12,318 and a AEI of .79 vs .87. Had 3% wins from STARTERS.

Lifetime he has 73% starters f/f of R/A & 73% winners, 6% SWs f/f of R/A & 13% SHs - Very Good!!!

He is definitely worth the $5,000 fee for 2008. He's somewhat of an enigma when you look at these numbers. I would guess that because of standing in WA. and had foals running in cheaper stakes, that would reflect in the avg. lifetime earnings per starter, AEI, etc. He only got 54 mares last year, but I would expect he will get nearly double that this year enlight of G2 wnr Mystical Plan & G3 wnr Celtic Dreamin .

Thanks Roke! You piqued my interest in revisiting this stallion as a possible for one of my mares! His family is outstanding!

According to Equineline thru 10/29/07 MOK has 528 foal of R.A. w/257 starters (49%), 106 winners (20%), 4 stakes winners lifetime (1%), win percentage 10%, placings 17%, for a total of 27% in th money lifetime (among the lowest I've seen).

Granted he was standing in Europe, but his lifetime avg. per starter is $13,564, per start $1,724, and median earnings of $2,091! Half of those starters have earned roughly 2 grand or less.

MOK's AEI is .80 vs .96

I would love to see a nice son of Danzig come to Ca., but those numbers look abysmal. He's had some success in Europe w/horses like Araafa (Ireland) & Vision of Flight (Australia). He did get 68 mares this year, so he must be a pretty nice individual, but thus far with 257 starters, his numbers are clearly sub par. His 2006 ABC APEX (avg. progeny earning index) is .87 and midyear 2007 it's .75.[/quote]

The problem with that thought is the facts speak volumes in MOK's case. He may do well in Australia or Ireland where he had some success, but his record unfortunately is abysmal. His earnings per starter this year is $5,192 and his in the money percentage is 23%. With 162 runners this year no less, and only39 won! Those are facts you cannot ignore.

Mull of Kintyre's progeny will do fine in the soft Cal-Bred fields on the turf...I'm just not sure how well they'll handle running with western saddles on their backs.

Powerscourt surprises me at that big of a drop--why are sons of Saddler's Wells dropping so badly in the US (Sligo Bay at Adena--his sales are abismal, don't know about Perfect Soul at Darby Dan)???

I'm not up on the Kentucky sales per se, but Powerscourt got 113 mares in 2007.

But the number of mares a stallion is reported covering can be deceiving also. If the stallion has been syndicated and sixty shares sold, it may be that 120 mares were shareholder mares. It would be REALLY telling if that were the case and the horse only got 113 mares from his own shareholders. Either way, the syndicate gets no money in, ie: no outside seasons were sold. Sometimes people buy the shares thinking they will be able to sell the seasons and recoup their investment that way, without going to all the trouble and expense of actually BREEDING to the stallion. That can really hurt the stallion because as the breeding season progresses, the price falls on those share seasons and virtually guarantees fewer or no full price seasons will be sold.

I wondered at Powerscourt's drop also. I saw a couple of Perfect Soul yearlings at Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Yearling Sale and they looked okay. One of them was one of the better yearlings I saw all day.

It could also be that Ashford wants to keep the flow of mares going and 100 plus mares on a grass horse is pretty good given the Kentucky market. Also consider all the new stallions coming on line, making it more competitive for horses standing in the 10-15K price. Ashford likes big books!

Powerscourt officially dropped from $10,000 to $7,500. Actually, I bred my Theatrical mare to Powerscourt this spring and I didn't pay, or agree to pay, $10,000.

Did anyone ever find out where Mull Of Kintrye and Hold That Tiger are going? I haven't seen it posted anywhere.

When I called originally they said MOK was going to David Fergusons farm in CA.. but he announced getting Monashee Mountain.. so maybe that isn't correct..

You would think that California would get tired of the sub par Kentucky rejects. I have a feeling he's going to go the Gentlemen route, so they should get him a direct flight to Louisiana and save some shipping costs.
