Does anyone here on the forum live in Harrodsburg? I may apply for a job transfer there and I am just interested in knowing more about the area.

The one in Ky?
Harrodsburg
Lovely area about 30 miles south of Lexington. Lots of farms, some horse farms, 30 minutes to lots of horse farms and Keeneland Race track. Very historic, dates back to before the revolution. Quaint Beaumont Inn, wonderful fried chicken, traditional southern cusine. Close to Centre College and Univ. of KY. Historic village of Shakerstown is there. Bedroom community for Lexington. I believe the old George C. Scott movie, the Flim Flam Man, was filmed there.
As an aside, until a few years ago if you saw a Japanese car in Harrodsburg they were a visitors. From a very small pre WWII farm community they lost about 100 men from a local national guard unit in the Bataan Death March. Absolutely everyone lost family or close friends.

Since there are a couple of you looking for insights I'll post my thoughts here. I grew up in the North so my view of the area comes from a "yankee" perspective. I work in Lexington, but cannot afford $20K an acre for a farm so we chose H'burg where property is still reasonable. I wish we had just waited until something a bit closer came available in our price range. Here's why:
1) Unless you grew up in Kentucky and are a devout Baptist, don't expect your neighbors to talk to you or make any friends. Seriously. I don't want to turn this into a religious debate, but I've never meet a more closed group in my life.
2) It is like living in the 50's. When my neighbor took us around town (before we declined his invitation to attend his church) he took us past the "colored" restaurant and said it was OK to eat there as the food was good. I had never heard this term used outside of movies and was stunned that he used it in polite conversation.
3) There are no good restaurants open for dinner. Again - seriously. Plan on driving to Danville, Frankfort or Lexington if you want to eat - including anytime on Sundays.
4) Aside from Walmart there is no place to shop - plan on shopping in Lexington for anything other than the basics.
5) People CANNOT drive. I've lived in a lot of places, but this is by far the worst. I think you can clear about 3 cars at a time though a stoplight. Green does not mean go here.
6) Continuing on the above, life is at a much slower pace than I am accustomed to. People think, speak, and act SLOWLY. There is no "fast" in fast food.
7) The land is not nearly as flat and fertile as in Lexington and there is much more rock. Plan on spending $$ on pasture renovation and maintenance.
So, in a nutshell, I absolutely, 100% hate Harrodsburg.

I live in Bowdoin Maine
Hi! I live in Bowdoin, Maine and work for the post office in Freeport which is home of L.L. Bean and some outlet stores. We do have horse racing up here but it is all standardbred racing. I have looked at several places in Kentucky that are open for jobs in Somerset and Mount Sterling. I seen a nice farm for sale in Somerset with 35 aces and a stone house for $123,000 and another place in Winchester, Kentucky with 7 acres for $75,000. I like it here in Maine other than the winters. I grew up in Charles Town , West Virginia and I have lived in Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina. I also lived a couple of years in Idaho and one year in Illinois. Here in Southern Maine the communities are small but and I do most of my shopping in Brunswick, Maine. One thing in Maine that is big is the County Fairs which go on from August to October every week. I just noticed that houses are so much cheaper in Kentucky than in Maine depending on what you are looking for as far as property. Anyone know much about the Mt. Sterling and Somerset, Kentucky area?

You don't drive a Japanese car do you CS?
Please say hello to my wife's cousin Hershel when you see him again.
You do know why those Baptists don't make love love standing up?
Afraid someone might see them and think they were dancing.
The hills won't change their shape but hopefully it will get better for you. Drive to Louisville, we have all the Sonics and Taco Bells you might crave.
Danville does seem better - although they still need something better than Peebles for shopping. Don't get me wrong - I HATE to shop, but it would be nice to have more selection than Walmart and Kmart. I work in Lexington, so the 43 mile drive on-way is more than enough. I couldn't mentally handle another 15 miles each way!
fullspeed - do you have a TB farm? Where did you move from?
hpkingjr - It is just so foreign to me here.... My husband is from California so neither of us can "appreciate" the local culture. Even people at work raise and eyebrow at where I live - "clan country" as they call it!
