Yep! Same farm that I called.. They told my to breed my Doyoun mare to Explicit.. Yeah.. So I passed because of that.
I luckily called when the guy was in the office or I would probably be waiting for a call still.
Sad stuff. No wonder he didn't get any mares in KY.

He seems to be in a better place now. When I contacted Metropolitan via their website, I received a response within a couple of days. He is probably under better management now. However, I still have not found an updated conformation picture of him.

The horses in the bottom half of his pedigree are no slugs!

Northern Spur's legs look very straight to me, what can be wrong with his conformation:
http://www.theshedrow.com/Jul11/shedrow6.htm

SADLER'S WELLS (Bold Reason) - c. 1981: 6 wins, £493 080. Won Airlie/Coolmore Irish Two Thousand Guineas (Gp. I), Phoenix Champion Stakes (Gp. I), Coral-Eclipse Stakes (Gp. I), Panasonic Beresford Stakes (Gp. II), Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial Stakes (Gp. II). 2nd Prix de Jockey Club (Gp. I), 2nd King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes (Gp. I). T.F.R. 132.

The Beresford Stakes is run over 1 mile and the Irish Two Thousand Guineas is run over 1 mile. He did not have enough steam for the 1m 4f Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. He did best at 1m 2f and under. You do have races of that distance in the USA don't you?

As a two-year-old, Sadler's Wells also won the General Assembly
Maiden Stakes at Leopardstown over 7f

As a three-year-old, Sadler's Wells also finished second in the Gladness Stakes over 7f at the Curragh

Elles,
Thank you so much for your time and effort into looking into Northern Spur's family for us. Hopefully I will finish my write up on him shortly, and thank you for finding that shedrow picture of him.

Crystal,

I know it really does not concern me at all but I hate it when people don't seem to see the quality that is there. And he did well against Sandpit didn't he? Or is that of no use?

Please look at Princely Gift and Rheingold and Supreme Court in this list:
http://www.chef-de-race.com/articles/ti ... eights.htm
Rheingold also won the Prix Ganay over 10 1/2 furlongs.

Can't fathom out the preoccupation with conformation. First of all Northern Spur passed the racecourse test emphatically proving that his conformation was efficient. His results with his first two reasonable sized crops to race were huge. His first crop of 22 foals yielded 17 runners , 14 winners including 3 stakes winners and 2 stakes placed. His second crop of 18 foals gave 17 starters , 13 winners and two stakes placed ! In otherwords his offspring have the conformation to pass the racecourse test. What more convincing do breeders need ?

Wow a Breeders Cup winning son of Sadler's Wells that has shown he can breed stakes winners and durable horses standing for just $3000 at a reputable Stud Farm. Northern Spur is just the sort of sire small breeders can access with a realistic chance of breeding a classy racehorse.

The fact that these horses can go a distance does not mean that they are plodders! Think of the topic (in the general discussion part) about Ribot and him running away from the field. And then look up Ribot here: http://www.chef-de-race.com/articles/ti ... eights.htm

Ken McLean in his book: "Designing speed in the race horse":

Coolmore never shuttled their star performer Sadler's Wells.

Sadler's Wells is an exceedingly valuable stallion. He quickly achieved fame as a sire of turf runners throughout Europe and his son El Prado is one of the most successful sires in North America, where his progeny excel on dirt and turf.

Sadler's Wells may be ranked with the most influential sires ever to stand in Europe.

Sadler's Wells will be added to an illustrious list of influential sires that shaped the breed.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In his book Mr. McLean gives his top 20 list of Northern Dancer's top sons.
The first 10 horses in his list are:
1. Sadler's Wells
2. Nureyev
3. Danzig
4. Nijinsky
5. Storm Cat
6. Northern Taste
7. Vice Regal
8, Lyphard
9. Unfuwain
10. Fairy King (full brother to Sadler's Wells)

So who is going to breed an other Islington, Galileo, http://www.pedigreequery.com/high+chaparral, Montjeu or Beat Hollow??!

Elles, That sire list about touches on just about all of my favorite sires.. Could you expand on Northern Taste for me a little? You have been awesome at all the research you did on Spur's female side of the pedigree.

If you are interested in Northern Taste blood, Utopia is a new stallion in NY.

Northern Spur is sire of 8 crops, 73 foals, 63 starters, 2 black type winners, 42 winners, $4,000,336, including Chausson Poire ($208,634, Valley View S. -G3, etc), Worthily ($72,524, Silver Tankard S., etc), Northwest Hill (to 8, 2006, $346,674, 2nd Prairie Meadows Handicap -L, etc), Titia ($256,217, 2nd Honeymoon S.), Spurred (to 2, 2006, $147,380, 2nd Mohawk Handicap (R), etc).

Starters /Foals 84%, Winners /Foals 56%, Winners /Starters 67%
Average Earnings/Starter $63,462; Median Earnings $22,932
Blacktype Wnrs/Foals 3%, Blacktype Wnrs /Strs 3%
Blacktype Horses /Foals 11%, Blacktype Horses /Strs) 13%

Jockey Club statistics show Northern Spur's percentage of live foals to number of mares bred to be quite variable.
Arranged by Breeding Year/Foaling Year and Mares Bred/Live Foals

06/07 12/5 42%
05/06 11/5 45%
04/05 11/4 36%
03/04 10/7 70%
02/03 11/7 64%
01/02 16/6 38%
00/01 17/5 29%
99/00 19/12 63%
98/99 30/18 60%
97/98 42/24 57%

Even so I wish there were something comparable to him in Florida to breed to!

Thank you very much for all who responded.

Patuxet - that confirms my suspicions. I hope that with a new environment Northern Spur is able to raise those numbers during this year's season. He's an excellent addition to the NY program.
